A lot of people ask me how PE firms profit and there are three major ways but the highlight are Management fees traditionally consist of a firm charging an LP 2% of committed capital. The fee is charged regardless of whether a firm is successful in generating a profit for investors. A $1 billion fund charging a 2% fee would land a private equity firm $20 million a year in revenue. Management fees are the most consistent and reliable revenue stream, because they are paid annually and are easy to predict. This is why firms typically think of management fees as what ‘keeps the lights on’ and supports back-office staffing and the day-to-day running of the firm The fees can vary greatly. Management fees can hit a floor of 1% and carried interest of 10%, according to Springer. Special circumstances vary, for example, firms will often lower management fees as a fund is winding down, since they have fewer portfolio companies and are therefore doing less work. During an initial deal, private equity firms will often charge their portfolio companies a transactional fee worth 1% of the deal amount. All else being, smaller funds generate a greater proportion of their revenue from carried [interest], while larger funds generate more from management fees.

Azimut Group, via its Australian subsidiary AZ NGA, network of financial advisory firms in Australia established in 2014 as a part of the Azimut Group, focusing on acquiring minority and majority equity stakes in high-quality financial planning and advisory firms, has entered into a strategic partnership with financial services institution AMP Limited and advice services group Entirety to create a compelling and unique offer for AMP’s financial advisers. Under this agreement AZ NGA will acquire AMP’s minority equity stakes in 16 leading retail financial planning firms, which collectively have assets under advice of approximately A$ 14 billion, and will provide business growth and succession solutions. The deal reinforces Azimut’s commitment to Australia’s wealth management market for the long-term and reflects the will to investment in high-value strategic opportunities, elevating Azimut’s total foreign investments to nearly €1 billion, including the significant and profitable investment in Kennedy Lewis Investment Management. Darragh Cleary recently met?Brett Jollie?to discuss the growth of fund management firms adopting 'Cost-Out' strategies, which are aimed at reducing overall operating expenses and increasing productivity within a business. Brett is the former Chief Executive of Aberdeen Asset Management Australia ('abrdn') and is currently a Partner with KONU Consulting, where he advises investment firms across Australia. ?? They discussed the driving forces behind the growth of firms adopting cost-out strategies, given the current macroeconomic environment characterised by increased interest rates and a contraction in economic growth, alongside a competitive landscape. Brett highlighted five key areas of focus for firms adopting these strategies including: ? Organisational structure ? Operating model ? Technology and systems ? Commercial arrangements ? Product and Distribution Organisations adopting such strategies must approach with caution and should ensure that strategies are carefully weighed up, as they can impact client relationships, morale, company culture, and can lead to the loss of IP and additional recruitment/retraining costs, which can ultimately have the opposite intended effect.
