Sadly, this is not a new problem. I was a social worker and discharge planner 10 years ago for an urban psychiatric hospital. There were too many patients whose insurance networks had almost no actual providers that I could find off the lists provided by the insurers (especially psychiatrists) who were: still at that location; not retired; still accepting the insurance in question or even that the listed phone number still worked! When frustrated patients complained to their in-hospitalist psychiatrist, I recall one of my doctors bluntly responding, "Don't blame me for the cheap insurance policy your employer (or spouse's employer) purchased for this year!" Just saying...

That's almost as cruel as hospitals keeping loved ones away from a hospitalized patient during Covid so they could die among strangers.

This is a shockingly tragic story. I hope someone follos though with holding the parent company and the subsidiary accountable for failing this man and - no doubt- countless others.
