September 8th 2024 To the editor: North Toledo residents fight blight again. This year residents in North Toledo came together to combat blight and had another successful year. We call ourselves the North Toledo Coalition, neighbors coming together for neighborhood issues. We are advocates for our neighborhood who strive for better days. This year we organized three cleanup events, our first one was covered by The Blade (“Crew collects mess to clean up N. Toledo,” March 24). We measure our success by a few simple metrics, how long it takes to fill up the truck, how many abandoned tires are collected, and how many volunteers help. In previous cleanup events it would take us less than an hour to fill a truck up; we would collect over 50 tires easily at each event. This year’s three cleanups netted about 40 abandoned tires. We had several volunteers from different backgrounds participate. The goal of our events is to reduce blight; in turn that reduces crime, adds to neighborhood engagement, and offers hope to those residents that feel the neighborhood has been forgotten. Our efforts would not be possible without our partnerships. The city of Toledo has been so supportive with our projects, our volunteers consisted of church members from Salem Lutheran, a few Lowe’s employees and most importantly members of the community. We will continue our initiative into 2025 because it is successful. ALFONSO R. NARVAEZ North Toledo #CommunityService #Toledo

This kind of circularity should be obvious.
If you work or live by a University, you know how Move Out can kind of break your heart. But this year we did things differently… With the help of a great team of students and campus + community volunteers, this is ALL THE STUFF we saved from landfill at Illinois State University Move Out this year! Everything will be stored, sorted, and cleaned over the summer - then will be given back to incoming students for free during Summer Preview & at our big Front Yard Free Cycle this fall. This was one heavy lift: months of planning, then 10 straight days of collecting, transporting, and unloading moving trucks. (and of course some dumpster diving) We are exhausted, sore, and a little bruised up…but we did it! *Not seen: 600+ mattress toppers delivered to Kern Mattress for recycling into upholstery filler, hundreds of pounds of food delivered to the School Street Food Pantry, numerous tarps & sleeping bags dropped off at Home Sweet Home Mission homeless shelter, and about 20 pairs of crutches given to LIFE CIL.

Steve is a pro at selecting practices to make his operation more sustainable and efficient.?He plants drought resistant miscanthus grass which improves land use efficiency, reduces erosion,?improves soil carbon sequestration, and protects the local water supply.?He then harvests the carbon-rich biomass and uses it in his compost-bedded pack barn to keep animals dry and comfortable.??#regenerativeagriculture #circularity #resourceefficiency
Miscanthus day at Central Manor Dairy. This 13 year-old stand was established with a grant from Northeast SARE. It's still providing off- season bedding for our animals while providing a buffer to protect the water supply for the elementary school in the background.

Sign the letter: Urge President Biden to Issue an Executive Order Stopping the Unlimited Killing of Wolves on Our Federal Public Lands https://shorturl.at/dpHWY The horrific destruction and abuse of wolves under state management is widespread and ongoing. The only way to stop this cruelty is to restore federal protection for wolves. Clearly, the states are unwilling to “responsibly” protect wolves and we cannot allow them to continue devastating these populations. On May 24, 2021, on a Brave Wilderness broadcast with Coyote Peterson, President Biden reported his grandkids were telling him “Pop, Pop, they’re killing all the wolves, Pop!” He pledged his support then to stop the destruction of wolves and it is time to hold him to this commitment. By executive order, he can enact federal protection for wolves today. “I’m in with you,” he pledged. We have waited long enough. Wolves cannot survive in this atmosphere of hate and limitless killing. We must act for Mercy’s sake and the hundreds of wolves and their pups facing death each day in the Northern Rockies. We view the beech tree as an ideal representation of generational wealth. The person who plants the seed understands that they may not see its maturation. Despite this awareness, they proceed with planting the seedling to help ensure that future generations thrive beneath its sheltering canopy.
