On this day 107 years ago, October 13, 1917, a huge crowd with some estimates at around 70,000 people gathered in Fátima, Portugal, to witness a prophecy made by three shepherd children. The children, Lúcia Santos and Francisco and Jacinta Marto, said that the Virgin Mary would appear and perform miracles. Witnesses reported that for approximately ten minutes, after a period of rain, they saw incredible solar activity in which the sun appeared to dance across the sky, fall towards the Earth, and emit various colors of light. The clothes of witnesses which had been soaking, and the muddy ground suddenly became dry. A reporter for Lisbon newspaper, O Dia, wrote: “The silver sun, enveloped in the same gauzy grey light, was seen to whirl and turn in the circle of broken clouds [.. The light turned a beautiful blue, as if it had come through the stained-glass windows of a cathedral, and spread itself over the people who knelt with outstretched hands [...] people wept and prayed with uncovered heads, in the presence of a miracle they had awaited. The seconds seemed like hours, so vivid were they.”

FRENCH WORD OF THE DAY... "Disparition" - roughly pronounced diss-pah-ree-see-ahn - technically translates as ‘disappearance’, but it has an extra usage in France that might confuse English speakers. In French, 'disparition' is defined as ‘the act of going missing or fading away’. It also means to ‘no longer exist’, and in this sense, it is often used to talk about death in a polite or euphamistic way. After the death of a famous figure in France, you will often see newspapers headline with the phrase 'la disparition de' followed by the person’s name. It is similar to saying ‘the passing of’ in English when talking about death. If they were of particular importance, the team at the Elysée (French presidential palace) may send out a press release about a 'cérémonie d’hommage' (a tribute) for the person following their 'disparition'. Confusingly, you will also see people use 'disparition' to mean ‘disappearance’ in the sense that someone or something is now missing or not able to be located. Unlike many French words or phrases, there are no grammatical clues to follow here - 'disparition' is used in exactly the same way whether you're talking about a person who has gone missing or a person who has died. As such, you will need to read further in the French article to get necessary context to figure out if the person has died or if they are missing. Use it like this: La disparition récente du fils de Charles de Gaulle a donné lieu à de nombreuses commémorations en ligne. - The recent passing of Charles de Gaulle's son has given rise to many commemorations online. La police a publié des mises à jour sur la disparition de l'adolescente, mais nous n'avons toujours pas beaucoup d'informations. - The police have issued updates on the disappearance of the teenager, but we still don't have much information. europeanamericantravel.com

Today in Portugal we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 25 de Abril revolution, is a pivotal moment in Portuguese history. This day in 1974 marks the overthrow of an authoritarian regime, which had been in power for nearly five decades. The revolution brought an end to dictatorship and ushered in a new era of democracy, freedom, and social progress in Portugal. April 25th in 1974 was largely peaceful, with a movement initiated by the military but massively supported by civilians, and led to significant political and social reforms. Portuguese people celebrate this day as a symbol of liberty, democracy, and the triumph of the people's over oppression. It's a time to reflect on the country's journey towards freedom and to honor those who fought for democracy and human rights. During the celebration, you can expect to see parades, concerts, cultural events, and gatherings where people come together to commemorate this historic milestone in Portugal's history.

No words to describe
I find it difficult to describe what we lost on October 7, 2023: family members, friends, and faith. It was as if a great light was extinguished in a single day. Our friends at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, about 40 kilometers from Gaza, lost 84 people, including students and faculty members. Prof. Sergey Gredeskul and his wife, Dr. Viktoria Gredeskul, were both murdered at their homes by Palestinian forces. Sergey specialized in studying disordered metals, receiving the Ukrainian Science Award in 1985. Bar-Ilan University lost nearly 34 students in the Hamas massacre of the Supernova music festival in the early hours of the morning. The Weizmann Institute of Science lost Prof. Marcel Frailich Kaplun of the Department of Science Teaching, who was murdered in the massacre and burning of Kibbutz Be’er. And yet, the scientific excellence of Israeli academia continues to shine despite the adversity and sometimes even because of it. This tragic loss serves as a reminder of the fragility of life but also the enduring impact of knowledge and human connection.

It was very interesting to research how Glasgow's Museums have made headway in returning Benin Bronzes and how such agreements are made inside and outside of the legal context. But there remains some key strategic cultural questions for both museums in the Global North and South to answer, particularly as the relations between these two polities slowly shift.
