?? Safety is at the very heart of what we do at Convey, and a recent survey advocates that driver well-being and roadworthiness needs to be a key priority for operators to ensure safer roads for everyone in the future.
?? Whilst technology and vehicles continue to evolve, and operators do need to focus attention on the vehicles, human beings are ultimately responsible for the safe and legal operation of the vehicles themselves.
? Vehicle maintenance standards must, of course, never be compromised, but without well-rested and competent drivers at the wheel, roadworthy vehicles don’t equate to greater roadworthiness - after all, vehicles don’t crash, drivers do!
?It is the responsibility of both operators, and drivers themselves, to make sure that they are safe behind the wheel, above and beyond what is required by Driver Law hours. Tachograph legislation was introduced to prevent dangerous driving practices and to improve driver wellbeing, and yet how many operators are actually aware of how their drivers are doing more broadly speaking?
?? Safe driving isn’t just down to hours behind the wheel and scheduled rest breaks, it is impacted by sleep quality, stress levels, lifestyle factors and a driver’s physical health status. But none of these variables are currently measured or monitored and this raises questions about how much our industry is really invested in driver well-being.
?? The subject of driver well-being and roadworthiness is something we’re diving deeper into at a special event next month… watch this space for more details coming soon!
