Our partners at The Illinois Network for Pretrial Justice has officially endorsed the FAIR Act (HB4842)! This legislation would dramatically increase funding for and access to public defense in Illinois by creating an independent statewide office of public defense. The Illinois Network for Pretrial Justice believes that ensuring that public defense is well resourced is essential for ensuring the successful implementation of the Pretrial Fairness Act. We know that without adequate resourcing of public defense in Illinois, the rights enshrined in the Pretrial Fairness Act will be unable to benefit the real people they are meant to protect in courtrooms across the state. In some counties, people who have been arrested are having to wait longer for their release hearings now than before the law changed because there is not a public defender available every day of the week in that county. As many of you know, GreenSquareAccord attempted—unsuccessfully once again—last week to silence, intimidate, and potentially imprison me for advocating on behalf of their unsupported residents. This legal battle, which began over a year ago after the Housing Ombudsman upheld multiple complaints, shows no sign of ending. Despite offering mediation on several occasions, and with requests from the Housing Ombudsman, local councillors, and now even a county court judge, I’m left questioning: Is this just the GreenSquareAccord way, or is it reflective of a broader issue where housing professionals, who publicly advocate for transparency, remain silent as I fight for tenants' rights, freedom of speech, and the right to criticise a landlord for failing to maintain the homes of thousands of residents?
