Various algorithms can be used to solve network flow problems, depending on the type and structure of the network and the objective function. For instance, the Edmonds-Karp algorithm has a time complexity of O(VE^2), where V is the number of vertices, and E is the number of edges. In large-scale networks, this can lead to significant performance bottlenecks. Another significant factor to be concerned here as networks grow, both in terms of node count and edge density, the number of flow paths increases exponentially and this can overwhelm memory and computational resources.

5 Network decomposition

Network decomposition is one possible way to address the challenges and limitations of network flow algorithms in large-scale networks. This process involves dividing a large network into smaller subnetworks, which can be solved independently or in parallel, and then combining the solutions to obtain a global solution.
