Today, I proudly took action with NIVA - National Independent Venue Association's #FIXTHETIX initiative by sending a letter to my congressional representatives. At RealCount, we know that tracking primary sales can be a real headache for our customers. That’s why we step in to help them track sales across 110+ ticketing companies (and counting). With so much focus on primary sales, the secondary market often flies under the radar until a problem arises. This is why we’re thrilled to offer limited secondary market tracking to our users. Today, we uncovered some eye-opening examples of how the secondary market impacts both fans and the industry: - An arena event with over 30% more tickets listed on the secondary market than are actually sold. - A free event with tickets being resold for a minimum of $62. - A record-breaking listing (for us, at least) of $57K+. To share your voice as an artist, fan, or industry professional and push Congress to finally pass comprehensive ticketing reform, fill out the form here:?https://lnkd.in/emnszVsi

The Department of Justice (DOJ), along with various state attorney generals, have recently filed a case against Live Nation and its subsidiary Ticketmaster for violation of competition laws. The Department has alleged the following among other things: 1) Live Nation has acquired actual and potential competitors, and leveraged control over concert promotion and key venues to monopolize the ticketing market and exclusive dealing respectively. 2) Live Nation weaponized its control over large venues to force artists to use its services as their concert tour promoter. This control over tour was circled back to further cement its position in large venues market. 3) Ticketmaster’s long-term exclusive agreements with terms ranging from three to 14 years block rivals from the only significant channel of distribution to major venues. The petition could be accessed here: https://lnkd.in/gHZ-BHAt The Department has sought trial by jury for most of the allegations made. #Livenation #Tickmaster #largevenues #concertpromotion #ticketingservices

Want to pack the stands for your next band competition? Here are 3 ways that using online ticketing can make that easier! ?????? 1. You can partner with your local band sponsors and ask them to co-promote the event. If they have a physical location, take them a flyer or small poster with a QR code to purchase tickets immediately. 2. Send an email to your parent and alumni list with a link to purchase in the email. 3. Consider holding a festival before the competition and invite other local performing arts studios to participate. Use the QR code and online ticketing to make it simple for their parents and families to purchase tickets. And sell and scan ticket sales at the gate make the experience easy for people to show up on the day of the competition. #marchingband #softwarestartup

LiveNation owns well over 300 venues worldwide and manages over 400 music acts, effectively monopolizing the live music scene in all metropolitan cities. LiveNation tacks on specious fees, often amounting to 70-80% the cost of the original ticket. LiveNation fails to stop bots and cyberattacks from swarming TicketMaster and flooding the resale market, gouging actual fans and concertgoers. LiveNation withholds touring music acts from playing at venues that don't use TicketMaster to handle their ticket sales, effectively abusing their power in the market and making shows less accessible. LiveNation takes a generous cut of artist merch sales, however, artists don't receive any cut of concession items sold at their shows. "'Live Nation’s net profit margin last fiscal year was 1.4% - nowhere near other DOJ targets in the tech sector,' the company said in a statement, noting Apple and Google – both subjects of the Justice Department’s antitrust lawsuits, have margins north of 24%." ?? So, because LiveNation is not the Jeffrey Dahmer of corporate should they not be held accountable for "lesser" crimes still committed? Quit deflecting.
The US government and dozens of states sued Live Nation in a groundbreaking antitrust lawsuit, alleging that for years the parent company of Ticketmaster abused its industry dominance to harm concertgoers nationwide. If successful, the case could lead to sweeping changes in the market for live events – an industry that came under intense scrutiny in 2022 after glitches at Ticketmaster blocked millions from purchasing tickets for Taylor Swift’s “Eras” tour. For many critics of Live Nation, the Swift debacle revealed how a lack of competition has led to harms ranging from poor customer service, confusing pricing and expensive ticketing fees to restrictions on ticket resales - amounting to what many consumers complain of as death by a thousand cuts.

Fantastic to see some action being taken. If you're not aware of what's going on: Take a single Taylor Swift ticket. Only one company can sell the ticket. That company, Live Nation/Ticketmaster, buys the ticket it's "selling" immediately when it goes on "sale". No more tickets. Then it turns around and resells the ticket at many multiples, including "dynamic pricing" because, you know, everyone is desperately looking for that Taylor Swift ticket, creating artificial price inflation. The artist doesn't get additional money from this, and if the artist complains and they aren't on a Taylor-Swift level (who is?), LN/T can blacklist them from the venues they enjoy exclusivity with, which is to say, almost every single arena and stadium in the United States is now off-limits. This is a monopoly, and has been so since 2010 when the merger was inexplicably greenlit. #monopoly #livenation #ticketmaster

It is absolutely necessary that the monopolistic racket of Ticketmaster/Live Nation Entertainment be dismantled by this important effort of the U.S. Department of Justice. Especially when they’re the only entity powerful enough to do it right, with teeth, and not as likely to give in or be held hostage by their predatory practices as we have seen at local levels. (For example, here in Grand Rapids with the recent announcement by the Grand Rapids/Kent County CAA that yet another venue would be held hostage to a deal with Live Nation.) It won’t be overnight, but the long game is looking much better for disrupting their many cheat-to-win tactics, and freeing Kent County and others from the stranglehold this cartel has held in live events for far too long. If you’d like a great basic summary, this NPR update is a good option.

Ticketmaster controls 70% of event sales market. That’s because a 2010 merger of Live Nation and Ticketmaster gave the firm unfair control of the market. Now, the U.S. Department of Justice is accusing Live Nation of using long-term contracts with event venues, blocking venues from using alternate forms of ticket sales and threatening venues if they don’t route their event sales through Ticketmaster. Peter Carstensen, an expert on antitrust law, says that sometimes cases like this don’t focus on percentage of market share, but use market share as an indirect way to infer market power.
