For those that are new, like me, to the world of military, Veteran and family health related research, this Journal issue will be perfect to capture the essence and the life course of CIMVHR over the past 10 years. The field has grown, researchers have published many articles since the ones in this issue and it shows how they have continued to bring quantitative and qualitative research into focus on such a unique population in Canada. While I can't divulge what the cover is, I have to say that it is eye-catching! #research #military #Veterans #families

Transitioning from military service to civilian life can be complex, especially when our identity feels so attached to our veteran status. Although some may seamlessly adopt new identities post-service, others struggle to assume what feels like a new identity. This can be especially true for service members of an older generation, especially if they have spent a significant portion of their life and career in the military. It's natural to question who we are beyond our veteran title, but it's also an opportunity for self-discovery and growth beyond our service. Let's navigate this journey with compassion and openness, embracing the multifaceted identities that make us who we are. Share this with a transitioning veteran! For our more seasoned vets, what do you think? What has it been like for you transitioning to civilian life? Let us know in the comments!

On Remembrance Day, we take a moment to honour the brave men and women who have served in our armed forces, reflecting on the significant sacrifices they’ve made for our freedom. Yet, for many veterans, their battle doesn’t end with military service. Transitioning to civilian life can be tough, as they face challenges such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the search for purpose, and the need for social connections. Please check out our latest blog post to learn more: https://lnkd.in/g-4epTV2

I read an article about Tim Walz by Gabe Whisnant, Deputy Weekend Editor, Newsweek Magazine, in which he stated: “Tim Walz, 60, served in the Army National Guard for 24 years, which makes him the longest-serving military veteran to be a major-party vice presidential nominee.” National Guard Service is part time – typically one weekend per month and one two-week period each year, unless the member is called up to active duty by the President of the United States. Because he served for 24 years in the National Guard, he is considered a veteran, which for reservists and guard members (without an active-duty component) require a minimum of 20 years of service to achieve. The following is a calculation of Tim Walz likely time served, unless he was called up to active duty by the President. (2 weeks = 14 days) + (12 weekends = 24 days) = 38 days/year 38 days/year * 24 years = 912 days 912 days/365 days per year = 2.49 years of service Typical active-duty service lengths can be as short as 2 years if drafted and as long as 6 years if voluntary, not taking into account any extensions of service. In realty, comparing the overall time spent on a part-time service which required 10.5% of his time to those who were active-duty veterans with a 100%-time commitment for a shorter period of time is not an accurate comparison.
