In the face of existential threats, like extreme weather, fires and floods, Renee Lertzman, PhD makes a few points very eloquently. Your feelings are legitimate - even if you are one of the furthest away in terms of direct effects, you may still feel deeply about these events. Highly sensitive people halfway around the world can feel things deeply even though not physically present and that is real, as is the lived experience of those at the centre of disasters. When faced with the trauma of an existential threat, check your urge to blame, stay present in yourself, attempt to down-regulate your nervous system to enable strategic thinking, generosity and other pre frontal cortex processes and endeavour to open your window of tolerance. This is what I took away from the video, but watch it yourself for a few moments of educated advice. maybe you'll take something else away from it. Renee, your expertise is refreshing. Thank you.

In the wake of devastating wild fires at one of the most densely populated urban/wild interfaces in the world, I want to offer a few reflections that may be helpful for whomever may be feeling shock, stunned, without words, angry, sad, grief and all in between. Having studied and focused on the psychology of existential threats -- where the natural and human collide in often devastating and complex ways -- I believe we're stepping into a new kind of existential psychology. It does not exist presently, and we're being tasked with creating it. Every day. These attributes include: - Massive destabilization of normative reality. What is nature, human, industrial, biotic, political, collide more often. - Massive loss at unfathomable scales. Pushing many of us into a heightened trauma response, based on proximity and life experience. - Massive sensemaking. The need to understand, bring coherence and sense to what has just blown up aspects of our world is increasing. I hope this offering on this January morning is of some help and benefit for those who come across it. Most importantly take care of yourselves and others. Compassion. In my work, I find myself reflecting a lot on how important it is to be compassionate towards others, and towards ourselves, when we're engaging with the climate crisis. It's not easy dealing with all this stuff. Modern life throws all sorts of things at us - and it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the day to day - never mind trying to get your head around how we can best engage with how we give ourselves a good chance of securing a liveable future for our children. There are no easy answers when it comes to finding the best ways to work together on this. But taking time to understand where people are coming from, what matters to them, what's going on for them, can be good starting points for a conversation. Bombarding people with a load more facts probably isn't such a good way to start. Taking time to listen is undoubtedly a better way. I wrote about this recently, inspired by the work of psychologist Renee Lertzman, PhD. Her reflections on the importance of "attunement" have changed the way I work. The constant tug-of-war between internal and external conflict.? ? Have you ever noticed the constant tug-of-war between the world outside and what goes inside of you? As children, we were often told to come inside when it was raining, too cold, or dark. We were encouraged to color inside the lines. Nature, which is our ultimate healer, was something we couldn’t bring inside, but we were always told to stay inside. These are things we hear often. The moment we begin repeating them in our heads they become part of our belief systems.? ? What about our internal world? Our mental, physical, and spiritual health? We need to nurture these aspects to be our best selves. Yet, society often pushes us to focus on external achievements and appearances. To truly heal, be your authentic self, be innovative and healthy, we need to focus on what is inside.
