The ACHE's end-2023 hospital CEO survey put "workforce challenges (e.g., personnel shortages)" at the top of the list (again). Underneath that- 86% marked "RN shortages" and 79% marked burnout among non-MD staff as top priorities All these tie together, but reminder that the shortage is NOT just patient demand > RN supply- it's mounting dissatisfaction among RNs at the bedside, turning to agency and other alternative employers as a result Hospitals still are the employer of choice for most RNs- back in 2019, I had a high-performing employee leave us after finishing her degree, with a clear rationale: "Hospital nursing is why I just got my RN, and it's what I want to do next" BUT this status as "employer of choice" is fading, driven by old systems and processes. In many states, such as Texas, there exists a significant surplus of Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) beds, with an average occupancy rate of approximately 65%. This excess capacity not only results in financial losses for business owners due to the absence of economies of scale, but it also exacerbates staffing issues by dispersing limited personnel across underutilized facilities. The inefficiency of maintaining numerous half-empty buildings is compounded by a higher operational cost per patient and the inability to optimize resource allocation. The root of this staffing dilemma partly lies in the government’s reluctance to address the mismatch between supply and demand in the SNF sector. By encouraging/madating consolidation—essentially rightsizing the number of operational facilities to better match actual needs—we could more efficiently utilize available staff, enhancing care quality, reducing operational redundancies, and yes, improving profitability for the survivors. If executed properly, consolidation could serve as a strategic response to the immediate challenges facing the post-acute care sector. This approach would not only streamline operations but also improve profitability by eliminating the financial drain of maintaining unprofitable facilities. In the short term, this could lead to a substantial alleviation of staffing shortages, provided that the transition is managed with careful planning and adequate support for affected employees. This proposal requires a collaborative effort between government bodies and private sector stakeholders to develop a framework that supports effective consolidation while minimizing negative impacts on the workforce and patient care. By addressing the issue of excess capacity, we take a critical step towards a more sustainable and efficient healthcare system for post-acute care. https://lnkd.in/gfUwcabz
