The first half of this series explained the importance of transfer, and how to measure it. But how can a curriculum build students’ skills at transferring knowledge? ?? Listen as READS Lab postdoctoral researcher, Douglas Mosher, explains: knowledge is just not a basket of disconnected facts. Rather, students need to build robust schemas that make it easier to transfer their knowledge when they encounter the unfamiliar.

I am pleased to share my recent publication, “Enhancing Students’ Reasoning Skills by Asking Students to Provide Evidence-Based Explanations in Science Classrooms: Findings from TIMSS 2019,” co-authored with Dr. Lin Ding. Our study demonstrates how encouraging evidence-based explanations can significantly improve students’ reasoning skills in science.

This new paper just out in Studies in Science Education with Jan van Driel, Peggy Kern and Wee Tiong Seah (佘伟忠) This is perhaps the work I'm most proud of. A culmination of over two years of work, this scoping review is the first to report on the diverse values espoused by students in science education. Drawing from my background in wellbeing and mathematics education values research, I've long wondered what insights a values perspective could bring to science education. Like my work on mathematical wellbeing, this paper points towards also developing a values-based framework of "science wellbeing". One interesting finding in this paper was the consistency in what students value across different geographical locations - suggesting some universal aspects of how students want to experience science learning. From the 55 unique values we identified, students mostly value science learning that is interesting, understandable, relevant to the world and their lives, involves opportunities for peer collaboration and enhanced through hands-on pedagogies. When students’ values (i.e. the things they consider important) are acknowledged, relationships are strengthened, academic engagement and achievement improve, and student wellbeing is enhanced. Recognising that values can influence the effectiveness of educational practices, improving the alignment of teaching strategies with students’ perspectives can contribute to the wellbeing of students in the science classroom. https://lnkd.in/gbFTURKt

Our tools measure academic intensity using Abl's custom Academic Intensity Measure, which looks at three core areas: 1. Advanced coursework: The number of advanced courses a student takes, whether it’s honors, dual credit, AP, IB or college coursework. 2. Progression: The highest level of math and science a student takes and the specific sequences (think biology, chemistry, and physics) that strongly signal they’re headed toward building a solid understanding. 3. Persistence: How many credits, regardless of level, a student earns within core subjects like English, math, science, social studies, and world languages.

Often, for example, students just want to know what an academic means by “critical analysis” in their chemistry, geography, engineering or history assignment. Lecturers know “criticality” or a “good argument” in their discipline when they see it, but it can be tough to articulate to students in relatable terms. This is where learning developers’ expertise comes in."
