A reading room is more than just a cozy place to read. It’s designed to spark innovative and aspirational thinking in young children. This space encourages students to think for themselves and explore a world of possibilities through the pages of a book. Pat Davis was one of those students who found inspiration in his school’s Ben Carson Reading Room. So moved by how that space impacted his life, Pat wrote a letter to our co-founder, Dr. Ben Carson. https://lnkd.in/ejgEsEuu

Children may not always realize they have vision problems, as they may assume everyone “sees” the world as they do. Regular eye exams help in the early detection of common vision issues. In today's post, we discuss the impact on academic performance, enhancing their overall wellbeing and when eye exams are necessary. https://lnkd.in/gEN8YsBw Schedule a comprehensive vision exam today! As a teacher, what elements of education are causing you anxiety at the moment? From our experience within schools, talking to fellow educators and seeing the reports in the media, it's clear that anxiety is having a huge impact on the education sector at the moment. We're seeing anxiety about: Recruiting staff Recruiting students Financial pressures Losing a hard-earned good reputation Shaking a bad reputation A lack of hope in your students for their own future Crumbling infrastructure More children with special needs Greater neurodiversity in the classroom. Neuroscience can help us to better understand what happens in the brain when we are stressed and how to build resilience. It also offers better understanding of diversity in all its forms providing a better understanding of many individual differences and how to work better with staff and pupils starting where they are. This understanding is the basis for tools and tips that help teachers, school leaders and other professionals work better with pupils and each other. If you'd like to develop tools that will help you handle these anxieties in yourself and others, join our course: Neuroscience for Teachers, starting on 23rd September. "To truly heal, to truly embody who we are as humans, as educators, and as teachers, we must allow ourselves to rest, to unplug, to disconnect. And not for an emphasis on being able to do more, to plug back in, or to connect. But merely because we’re human, too; we deserve carved containers of rest and pause." On day 15 of #givingthanks, I am thankful that my employer sponsors faculty to attend conferences. Today, I had the pleasure of attending one of the NurseTim tours about brain science and transition to practice. One of my favorite nuggets of wisdom was the concept of “hugging” content, such as creating a case study based off of a current topic from a traditional lecture. This aids in long term memory storage! Fellow educators, what is one of your favorite teaching strategies? #thanksgiving #nurseeducator #nursetim #transitiontopractice

How are we prioritizing our students’ nervous systems? Here is a short list - ? Start with you! Do you have enough capacity to be able to “lend” your calmness? Are you grounded? Or are you also in a state of dysregulation? More than likely (especially if you’re an educator), you’re running on adrenaline and are dysregulated. This is a great opportunity to practice with students ways to reset the nervous system. With these practices, always make it an invitation, never force. ? Invite students to notice and observe their breathe - is it shallow? Is it deep in the belly? Is it fast? ? Invite students to take a few deep breathes. ? Invite students to feel the floor under their feet, or the chair they are sitting on, or how their socks feel on their feet (bringing awareness to body sensations). ? Invite students to notice how their shoulders, upper/mid/low back, stomach, chest, legs, and head feel. With these practices, you can have students do it on their own or share with a friend/partner that they feel safe with. The best practice, ultimately, is teaching students about their nervous system and having them become aware of what is showing up for them. If you’re a school administrator and understand that nervous system regulation is the missing piece to having students engage in learning, reach out! I’m looking to work with one more school this 2024-25 academic year. ?? Lili

?? Proud to announce that a new paper has been published! ? ???Motor skills are an important part of children’s daily lives, yet motor skill levels among children have significantly declined over recent decades. During recess children can practice their motor skills while playing and having fun. Since recess can be tailored into a more enhancing environment, we need to identify which factors in this setting most effectively support motor skill development. ? ?? The types of activities children engage in during play influence the specific motor skills they practice, while the peers they play with determine whose motor skills they can observe and imitate. In our research, we?examined how play activities and social interactions during recess were related to the motor performance of 6- to 8-year-old children. ? ?? I want to thank my co-authors Marina Schoemaker, Leila Faber, Suzanne Houwen, and Esther Hartman for their invaluable contributions and collaboration on this research. ? Curious to learn more?
