In widowhood, there are three categories of support: military, civilian, and international. After researching all U.S. nonprofits serving widows on Candid and GuideStar, it's evident that there is a hierarchy when it comes to where the money travels. + Military widows, who make up the smallest percentage of U.S. widows, receive the most resources. + International widows, spread across many different countries, also receive U.S. support. + Unfortunately, civilian widows, who make up the largest percentage of U.S. #widows, receive the least amount of funding despite needing the most resources. These are the myths vs. realities of widow support and advocacy. It's clear that until this funding gap is addressed by foundations and funders, the divide between widows and support will remain significant. Let's work together to ensure that all widows, regardless of their category, receive the resources they need during this difficult time. Modern Widows Club operates on a foundation of evidence-based programs and services that have demonstrated significant and successful outcomes, leading to meaningful social impact. These initiatives are specially designed to cater to the needs of widows, offering support that is not only effective but also cost-efficient. Through these programs, Modern Widows Club is able to extend its reach to a greater number of women, ensuring that each individual receives the highest quality of support and assistance. When compared to other causes focused on women, such as efforts to serve survivors of #domesticviolence and #humantrafficking, Modern Widows Club's approach stands out for its lower operational costs and higher program efficacy. This strategic focus ensures that resources are utilized in the most impactful way, thereby maximizing the positive change it brings to the lives of widows and, by extension, the broader community. In fact, the global neglect of widow survivors make them more susceptible to domestic violence in new relationships and their daughters, a high target vulnerable for human trafficking. All symptoms of not caring for widows well. One million dollars spent on #widowsupport impacts 1000x more women and their families than any other female cause, because widow support is the largest women's cause worldwide with 300 million widows caring for 600 million fatherless children. #WidowSupport #NonprofitFunding #MilitaryWidows #InternationalWidows #CivilianWidows #modernwidowsclub #womenshealth #facts #compassion #impact

In the last few weeks, I’ve spoken to community members who have shared that their philanthropy has shifted since October 7 towards combating antisemitism and supporting Israel. This certainly makes sense given the war in Israel and Gaza and the uptick in antisemitism in our own country. In each conversation, I thanked them for supporting these critical issues facing the Jewish community. And then in my next sentence, I urged them to consider how the Jewish community will fight antisemitism and hate in the long run. I believe that I have one answer-- organizations that serve individuals of all backgrounds together in an inclusive and respectful community, like the Bender JCC. If you stand in the lobby of the JCC long enough, you can hear 10 different languages. Individuals of different backgrounds and faith communities come to the Bender JCC to focus on their health, educate their children, swim, build friendships, and be part of a community center that helps individuals and families create meaningful lives. In just a handful of weeks, we will launch our 2024 Lessans Camp JCC season. Even though our camp program is designed through the lens of Jewish heritage and values, 40 percent of the almost 600 staff members and campers are not Jewish. This is one of many examples why I believe the JCC is an antidote to hate and antisemitism.?We as a Jewish community are serving children and young adults of all abilities in a way that does not exist anywhere else. Our inclusive community goes way beyond how we serve individuals with disabilities, but how we welcome everyone no matter their identity. Each person and their individuality matters at the Bender JCC, and as a Jewish community we are forging bonds across communities that will have a lasting impact for many years to come. Let us continue to address the immediate needs of our community while not taking our eyes off the sustained work required to achieve long-term healing and unity.

Today is Children's Day. While some celebrate their beautiful, happy, and healthy children, others mourn the loss and suffering of theirs. According to UNICEF, every child, everywhere, has a right to live in a peaceful world. This is not the world we live in today. We are all watching a genocide that has killed over 15,000 children in 6 months and countless more over the last 75 years. We need to do what we can to help give all children the love and peace they deserve. Instead of just celebrating today, let your children know just how blessed they are and encourage charitable actions to aid children who aren't so fortunate. Educate your children about the ongoing suffering of children in Palestine and all over the world. Teach your children to be a voice for the voiceless. Teach your children indiscriminate compassion for all, compassion that is not based on colour, religion, or race. Teach your children to be part of the change, not the problem. May Allah free Palestine and the oppressed all over the world and end the suffering and pain of every child all over the globe. Ameen thumma ameen

Today, on the National Day of Service and Remembrance, we pause to reflect on the tragic events of September 11, 2001—a day that forever changed our country’s history. It’s a moment to remember the lives lost, honor the heroes who responded with unwavering courage, and recognize the unity that moved a nation. I, like so many, vividly remember where I was (NYC) on that fateful day. The shock, the disbelief, and the deep sense of grief remain etched in my memory. But so too does the incredible strength and unity that emerged in its aftermath. September 11th is more than a day of remembrance—it’s a call to action. It’s a chance to give back, to embody the spirit of resilience, and to support those who continue to serve. Whether through simple acts of kindness, volunteering, or organizing community events, we can all make a difference. Join us on this journey: Volunteer: Help us assemble Care Packages for our Military and First Responders. Organize: Lead a service event in your community. As we honor the memory of those we lost, let’s come together in service, kindness, and unity. ?? How will you participate in this National Day of Service? #911Day #NationalDayOfService #NeverForget #Service #Volunteer

Mass incarceration disproportionately impacts BIPOC individuals in the United States. African Americans make up 13% of the population but count for 41% of people on death row. Racial disparities exist at every level from misdemeanor arrests to executions. The Equal Justice Initiative is committed to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States and challenging racial and economic injustice. EJI opened the Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice where over 600,000 people have come to learn, remember, and commit to truth telling about our history. Dream Corps’ mission is to close prison doors and open doors of opportunity across racial, social, and partisan lines. Dream has helped return more than 7,000 people home from prison. This Black History Month consider supporting these organizations and their missions to strive for a more equitable society. Where much of #philanthropy is retrenching from #RacialJustice work in the wake of SCOTUS' ban on #AffirmativeAction, the Black Led Movement Fund (BLMF) is steadfast in resourcing and supporting Black-led movement orgs. The demands and questions raised during protests to the murders of #MichaelBrownJr in 2014, #GeorgeFloyd in 2020, and countless police murders before, in between, and since, remain unaddressed. And in their work, Black organizers continue to face alarming risks—from restrictions on protesting to RICO and domestic terrorism charges for doing so. Philanthropy cannot waver. What can funders do? READ: BLMF Program Director Julia Beatty joined friends from Compton Foundation, National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice, and Common Defense for a panel at the Funders Committee on Civic Participation to answer this specific question. They offered five takeaways. https://lnkd.in/eKNyTs-C READ: The BLMF and Communities Transforming Policing Fund (CTPF) just launched the learnings from their Movement-Defined Learning (MDL) Project, a participatory learning and evaluation project designed to support community partners in defining their own impact and align philanthropic practices to their wisdom. https://lnkd.in/gyWa-Pgf

MWC Vault: Washington DC As we celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Modern Widows Club we’re taking a moment to reflect on key moments from our journey. One notable event was our trip to Washington DC to participate in the inaugural International Widows Day Forum 2023 with The Global Fund for Widows. During this significant gathering, our team of dedicated widow advocates engaged with 10 legislators to push forward the agenda of improved widow care. We highlighted the challenges widows face and sought meaningful solutions. We realized the absence of a dedicated widowhood caucus in Congress, recognizing the need to establish one to rally stakeholders who can advocate for widows’ rights effectively. Nor was there a subgroup in the Women’s Caucus advocating for those in widowhood. Furthermore, we noted the lack of a nationally recognized day for widows in the U.S., something we are determined to change. Additionally, the absence of an Office on Widowed Persons within the Department of Health and Human Services or the Department of Elder Affairs became apparent. Addressing these gaps is crucial for enhancing support for the 14 million widows across the nation, making the U.S. a leader in widow advocacy. We took with us a 11K signature petition to advance widow care and rights. It’s not enough to better serve widows in need, we must also fight for more equitable and inclusive rights. #advocacy #nonprofit #modernwidowsclub #impact #widowsupport #internationalwidowsday #forum #government #awareness #widowadvocate #movement #widowcare

We are deeply saddened and outraged by the tragic death of Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old African American woman, who was unjustly killed in her home by police officers. This incident, captured on body camera, is yet another stark reminder of the systemic issues plaguing our society. We cannot afford to remain silent when such injustices occur. Each of us has a role to play in advocating for change and ensuring that every individual, regardless of their race, is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. What if this was your mother, sister, daughter, niece, or friend? At Nonprofit Fundraising Management (NFM), we are committed to supporting efforts that address these critical issues—it’s one of the primary reasons we do what we do: support Black Churches in their efforts to increase education, health, prosperity, safety, and growth in their communities and beyond. We believe in the power of community action and the importance of standing together against injustice. How You Can Help Fight for Justice! - Get Involved: Join local advocacy groups and participate in peaceful protests. - Raise Awareness: Use your voice on social media and in your community to highlight these injustices. - Support Change: Donate to and volunteer for organizations dedicated to reforming the criminal justice system and supporting victims' families. By coming together, we can drive the change needed to prevent such tragedies in the future. Let's honor Sonya Massey by committing to justice and equality for all. #JusticeForSonya #EndPoliceBrutality #NFMforChange #BlackLivesMatter #DoSomething
