Christy Moody, RN, MSN, CCRN, CPPS, and Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center (CPRMC), was recognized on October 27 by Becker’s Hospital Review as one of its “CNOs to Know” for 2024. This list recognizes top CNOs across the country for combining clinical expertise and executive leadership to ensure high standards of patient care while tackling nurse staffing shortages, managing nursing budgets, and developing professional growth opportunities for up-and-coming nurses. Nationwide, 213 CNOs were featured in the listing, including two from South Carolina. “It’s an honor to make this prestigious listing and even more so to work with so many incredible professionals at Carolina Pines who make recognitions like this even possible,” said Moody. “We have a wonderful team at Carolina Pines who work tirelessly to provide the best care possible while always putting the patient first. It’s a privilege to lead so many skilled and compassionate caregivers and see the impact they have on our patients every day.” Moody oversees Carolina Pines nursing division, including its operational budget and the scope of work of more than 400 employees. She is responsible for nursing standards and practices in all service areas of the hospital. Earlier this year, she was recognized as one of Becker's 90 Patient Safety Experts to Know in 2024, and in December, she was named the recipient of the South Carolina Hospital Association’s annual “Drive to Zero Harm Leadership Award,” one of the highest honors bestowed upon a healthcare professional by the organization. During Moody’s tenure as CNO at CPRMC, the hospital moved from a "D" grade in 2016 for patient safety from the Leapfrog Group to its current "A" grade, a rating it has held for five consecutive cycles. CPRMC was also named a “Top General Hospital” by The Leapfrog Group in December 2023, one of only 35 hospitals nationwide to earn the designation. In addition, Carolina Pines was recently named one of only three hospitals to earn the “Platinum Award,” ScionHealth’s highest honor as part of the company’s National Quality Strategy. ScionHealth operates 92 hospitals across 28 states. “Christy is a shining example of someone who has grown with our hospital, led by example, and continued to ask from her team the same excellence she puts forth,” said Bill Little, CEO of CPRMC. “In doing so, she has risen to the top nursing position in the building while helping our hospital improve in so many ways, from patient safety to patient experiences and outcomes. She truly is an exceptional CNO deserving of the recognitions she continues to earn.” The Becker's Hospital Review editorial team accepted nominations to compile the 2024 “CNOs to Know” list. The full list features individual profiles of the CNOs recognized and can be read here.

Nursing Philosophy and Mission Statement As a nurse, I believe in the transformative power of kindness, the domino effect of efficient leadership, the profound connection fostered through empathy, and the unwavering commitment to selfless service. These principles form the cornerstone of my practice, guiding every interaction and decision I make in patient care. Kindness is more than a gesture, for it is a fundamental approach that defines the patient experience. By extending warmth, respect, and compassion, I aim to create a healing environment where patients feel valued and understood. Leadership in nursing transcends management; it embodies advocacy, innovation, and mentorship. I strive to lead by example, empowering my team to deliver excellence in care while fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth. Empathy lies at the heart of effective patient care. By actively listening and understanding each patient's unique journey, I aim to provide holistic care that addresses not only physical ailments but also emotional and spiritual needs. Selfless service is a commitment to putting the needs of others above oneself. It involves dedication, sacrifice, and a tireless pursuit of improving patient outcomes and experiences. I approach every day with a deep sense of responsibility and humility, recognizing the privilege of being entrusted with the care of others. Overall, my nursing philosophy is built upon these principles. It guides me to be not only a skilled healthcare provider but also a compassionate advocate and a trusted partner in my patients' well-being. By upholding kindness, leadership, empathy, and selfless service, I hope to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those I am privileged to serve. My mission statement beyond kindness, leadership, empathy, and selfless service is built upon the concept, “To love means to will the good of others”. Meaning that at the heart of why I continually choose nursing is a passion to be an advocate, a voice for patients, to uplift those around me, and care for those who cannot always care for themselves. My “why” is I want to advocate for my patients’ care and wellbeing because in order to care and love well, we must will the good of others. My core values are what I want to shape my nursing career with. As I continue on in my career, I aspire to never lose my love for learning and improvement as I can always afford to recognize and develop an area of needed growth. Post graduation, I want to implement firsthand the values of inclusivity and empathy into the pediatric specialty. Becoming a pediatric nurse would enable me to will the good of others for one of our most vulnerable populations. Looking long-term, I hope to continue my education to become an accredited Nurse Practitioner. Graduating from a supportive and well-structured BSN program such as Texas A&M's, I feel immensely equipped to serve as a confident and diligent registered nurse.

Advocating for Safe Patient Ratios ? Case Studies: Success Stories of Improved Patient Ratios In the nursing profession, advocating for safe patient ratios is a critical endeavor that directly impacts patient care and nurse well-being. Several case studies highlight the success stories of improved patient ratios, demonstrating the positive outcomes of such advocacy efforts. Case Study 1: California’s Landmark Legislation California set a precedent in 2004 by becoming the first state to implement mandatory nurse-to-patient ratios. This legislation mandated specific ratios, such as one nurse for every five patients in medical-surgical units and one nurse for every two patients in intensive care units. The results were significant. Studies showed a decrease in patient mortality rates and an improvement in nurse job satisfaction. Nurses reported having more time to provide quality care, leading to better patient outcomes and reduced burnout. Case Study 2: Massachusetts’ ICU Staffing Law In 2014, Massachusetts passed a law requiring hospitals to adhere to specific nurse-to-patient ratios in intensive care units (ICUs). The law stipulated that each ICU nurse could care for no more than two patients at a time. This change led to a notable improvement in patient care. Hospitals reported fewer complications, such as infections and medication errors, and nurses experienced less stress and fatigue. The success of this law has prompted discussions about expanding similar ratios to other hospital units. Case Study 3: Queensland, Australia’s Safe Staffing Initiative Queensland, Australia, implemented a safe staffing initiative in 2016, mandating minimum nurse-to-patient ratios in public hospitals. The initiative required one nurse for every four patients during day shifts and one nurse for every seven patients during night shifts. The outcomes were overwhelmingly positive. Research indicated a reduction in patient readmissions and shorter hospital stays. Additionally, nurses reported higher job satisfaction and a better work-life balance, contributing to improved retention rates. ? These case studies underscore the importance of advocating for safe patient ratios. The success stories from California, Massachusetts, and Queensland demonstrate that implementing mandatory nurse-to-patient ratios can lead to better patient outcomes, enhanced nurse satisfaction, and overall improvements in healthcare quality. By continuing to push for such policies, we can ensure a safer and more effective healthcare system for both patients and nurses.

Innovations in Nursing Practice ? Community Health Nursing: ? Community health nursing is a vital branch of nursing that focuses on the health of entire populations. It represents a shift from traditional individual patient care to a broader perspective of public health. Innovations in community health nursing have been pivotal in improving the health outcomes of communities, especially in underserved areas. ? One of the significant innovations in community health nursing is the emphasis on preventive care. Community health nurses work to prevent disease and promote health at the community level through education, advocacy, and outreach programs. They collaborate with local organizations to develop health promotion activities and screenings that address the specific needs of the community. ? Another innovative practice in community health nursing is the use of technology to improve access to care. Telehealth services, for example, allow nurses to monitor patients remotely, provide health education, and consult with other healthcare professionals. This is particularly beneficial in rural or isolated areas where access to healthcare facilities is limited. ? Community health nurses also play a crucial role in emergency preparedness and response. They are often involved in planning and implementing strategies to deal with public health emergencies, such as natural disasters or disease outbreaks. Their knowledge of the community and its resources enables them to mobilize quickly and effectively in times of crisis. ? Furthermore, community health nursing has expanded to include policy advocacy. Nurses are engaging more in policy development to address social determinants of health and to ensure that health policies reflect the needs of the communities they serve. ? Community health nursing is at the forefront of transforming healthcare delivery. Its innovations have led to a more proactive, preventive, and patient-centered approach to public health. As community health nurses continue to advocate for and implement changes, they contribute significantly to the well-being of populations and the advancement of public health practices.
