An interviewer I had prior to Franciscan asked me the question: "Have you ever been asked to do something that wasn't a part of your job description?" And -yes- I mean... job descriptions can be pretty vague. I have come to the realization that the reason for that is because there is a lack of understanding of what an instructional designer is. I think that having a type of career where people ask "What's that" is very liberating! I can really get creative with this but here is a concise definition of what and ID-er is and what he or she does is left up to interpretation. An instructional designer uses or facilitates the instructional design process (like ADDIE- or Dick, Carey, and Carey methods) to design, develop, and test educational tools, modules, and training programs to test their effectiveness in knowledge transfer. I have been getting out from behind my desk as a "developer" to discover the different stages of education at Franciscan. At a committee for falls and mobility, there was a question as to why I was there. Reasonable inquiry as I don't work with patients. My short answer is "I am a systems thinker." Last year I worked with subject matter experts to develop a WBT (Web-based- training) module on a mobility protocol and its documentation. To find out during this meeting that different forms of training (one-on-one and WBT) for this particular documentation has been seen to be a challenge for staff was eye opening. When education is provided- a good ROI is (believe it or not) a part of what an instructional designer does. I get projects completed and assigned. But now I do want to spend some more time to be flexible in my inquiry. All of that is to say it is not in my "job description" but it is what I do. (Below is a picture of me with a camera about ready to record a demonstration of an assisted fall.) #instructionaldesign #education #adulteducation

How do instructional designers actually spend their day? This is something I wondered as I was changing careers. I knew the tasks an instructional designer was responsible for, but I wasn't sure what that looked like day-to-day. Maybe you're transitioning to instructional design and wondering the same thing. Let me demystify it for you! The Devlin Peck team surveyed over 1,000 instructional designers to find out what life was actually like on the job. In this week's video, I use that survey data to paint a picture of what a month may look like and we even focus on a day in the life of an instructional designer. Check it out with the link in the comments below! If you're an ID, what task(s) take up the majority of your day-to-day work? If you're new to ID, is there anything that surprised you? Let us know! #LinkedInWithDevlin #InstructionalDesign #Learning #LearningAndDevelopment #eLearning

Notes of an instructional designer… One of the things I love most about instructional design is how it brings together so many different elements. It’s truly cross-disciplinary and draws from a wide range of fields, such as: ·??????Design thinking ·??????Cognitive science ·??????Technology ·??????Learning science ·??????Psychology ·??????The art of communication ·??????Educational theory ·??????Graphic design ·??????Multimedia development ·??????User experience design I'm continually amazed by how much depth?there is to this job… and all that complexity? It’s an endless source of inspiration for me. There's always something new to explore and learn. Sure, it can be challenging at times… but that’s what makes being an instructional designer so captivating and rewarding!

I wanted to share my thoughts on this post because I believe it's essential to engage in this discussion. It's surprising how often I've encountered the practice of placing individuals into Instructional Design roles without any relevant training or education in the field. Often they don't even have a background in education. Even more astonishing is when leaders themselves lack experience or training in Instructional Design or teaching. It makes me wonder - why does this happen? Why do we continue to overlook the importance of expertise in the education field (yes instructional design falls under this), believing that anyone can simply step in and do it? #instructionaldesign #adulteducation #adultlearning #cognitivetheoriesofeducation #teaching #professionalgrowth #learninganddevelopment #learningdesign
Assistant Director of Instructional Design at Massachusetts Institute of Technology | Author | Podcaster | Instructor | Public Speaker
I’ve been noticing a major trend among the applicants of Instructional Design Institute. They’ve landed their first instructional design role (woo!), but the organization doesn’t have the right coaching and guidance in place to help them grow. Either they report to a manager who doesn’t have a background in instructional design or they are the first ID the org has ever hired. Without the right support system, it’s quite the challenge to learn about best practices. If this sounds like you, our next cohort begins on March 4th! I’d love to help you take your ID skills to the next level and share with you all of the blunders of my career so you know what not to do.?

A strong portfolio is the key that unlocks better opportunities as an instructional designer. ? Your portfolio is your chance to showcase your in-demand skills, creativity, and professional journey. It helps hiring managers get to know you and, decide to interview you, and extend you an offer.? ? But sometimes, it’s hard to see your own work objectively. Which is why a second pair of eyes can make all the difference. ? Getting feedback from someone who knows the industry can help you spot areas for improvement, highlight your strengths, and identify what truly sets you apart. ? That’s why I'm excited to share an interview with Vanessa Miller, who successfully transitioned from the classroom to a remote instructional design role by leveraging her portfolio. In this interview, Sabrina Gonzales takes you on a tour of the portfolio that helped Vanessa land her new ID role! Together, they’ll dive into the portfolio projects, and break down the key element that set her apart: from Vanessa's thoughtful visual design choices to her unique professional background that she highlights on her "about me" page. ? And stick around until the end to hear Vanessa share her personal journey into instructional design. She’ll talk about learning the tools, the importance of collaboration, and where she's at now. Check out their?their conversation with the link in the comments. And let me know what you think!
