NEW REPORT FROM AARP New York: Nearly half of Western New York voters age 40+ are caring for an aging family member or have already done so, and 74% say the responsibility is causing emotional stress. Most respondents (64%) care for a parent, while working (56 %) and 4 in 10 say their loved one suffers from cognitive decline. What is Family Caregiving? Family caregiving, or informal caregiving, involves individuals providing care to family members or loved ones due to health conditions, disabilities, or aging. This role is crucial for the healthcare system and impacts both caregivers and the broader economic and social landscape. ???? 100 million US adults are caregivers, with 53 million caring for a spouse, elderly parent, relative, or special-needs child. This has risen by 10 million since 2015. ???? Caregiving costs the US economy nearly $44 billion, leading to job losses and absenteeism. ???? Average weekly hours spent caregiving increased from 9 in 2020 to 26 in 2023. ???? Care recipients include older adults (41%), special-needs children (29%), and others. ???? 85% of caregivers care for a relative, often parents, with most living within 20 minutes of the care recipient. Family caregiving is a vital and growing part of the US healthcare system. Family members providing care face financial, emotional, and physical stress, often juggling caregiving with personal and professional responsibilities. Caregiving is rarely a “one-and-done” situation unless it is a response to an acute circumstance. Caregiving is a series of increasing responsibilities that can last years, especially for an older adult who has dementia or a neurological disorder like Parkinson’s or stroke. The average length of time someone spends caregiving is 4.9 years, but often much longer. The number of people providing care for five years or longer has increased from 24% in 2015 to 28% in 2020 and is likely even longer than that now and into the future. → Women are disproportionately affected by caregiving, with 75% of caregivers being women. They often have adult children or grandchildren at home and may still work part-time or give up employment to provide care.? → 89% of unpaid caregivers are related to their care recipients by either blood or marriage. 11% care for a friend, neighbor, or another non-relative. → Family caregivers who live with their older relative receiving care spend an average of 37.4 hours a week on direct caregiving duties. People who don’t live with their relatives spend an average of 23.7 hours a week on caregiving duties. Caregiving becomes a part-time or full-time job for many women as they struggle to manage families and careers while caring for an elder. This critical issue is often overlooked on the campaign trail despite its profound impact on millions of Americans. Her vision for affordable childcare, paid leave, and dignified retirement resonated deeply with families grappling with the complexities of care. This strategic focus on caregiving is one that candidates across the political spectrum should note. More than 53 million Americans provide care for an aging loved one or a family member with a disability or serious illness. The challenges they face are immense. Caregivers struggle to coordinate increasingly complex care, often under significant financial and emotional strain. Two-thirds report a hit to their personal finances, often going into debt, while nearly 40% experience high emotional stress due to caregiving. Millions have left the workforce to provide care, highlighting this community's urgent need for support. Harris’s brief spotlight on the care economy—less than 20 seconds of her roughly 30-minute-long speech—sparked excitement among care advocates and policy wonks. For instance, the Care Can’t Wait Action Coalition quickly launched a $500,000 ad campaign supporting Harris, targeting states like Georgia, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Acknowledging that the caregiving community largely consists of women, who often juggle raising children, working full-time, and managing care responsibilities is crucial. This imbalance perpetuates gender inequalities, with corporations historically paying men more and providing fewer benefits to women, including inadequate support for menstruation, inflexible hours, and longer workweeks for the same pay. Addressing these issues requires comprehensive policy changes, including: Equal Pay for Equal Work: Ensuring women receive the same pay as men for equivalent roles. Flexible Work Hours: Implementing flexible hours to accommodate caregiving responsibilities. Paid Childcare and Elder Care: Providing subsidies or direct payments for childcare and elder care. Housing Benefits: Offering rental assistance to alleviate the financial burden on caregivers. By acknowledging and addressing the systemic issues caregivers face, particularly women, we can move towards a more equitable society that supports all its members in their caregiving roles. Harris' emphasis on caregiving is a step in the right direction, and it is imperative that we continue to build on this momentum to ensure lasting change.
