Apart from a number of ancillary subjects, linguistics is the science that has been predominantly shaping my worldview. Therefore, in the course of my studies, I could barely have escaped the name Ferdinand de Saussure, who came up with the terms “langue” and “parole”, in English basically referred to as “competence” and “performance”, respectively. To render an explanation for the less linguistics savvy, the former is more about reception of information whereas the latter about usage thereof. What does that mean in the context of #CliftonStrengths? In a way, Clifton-strengths domains can be categorised in this way as well. On the “competence” side, we can find those who enjoy gathering vast amounts of information. Some enhance their thinking through conversations, listening or just being listened to. These talent themes are located in the Relationship-building domain. Others, found in the realm of the Strategic-thinking domain, prefer using other resources, or even just their own mind (I know, oh, I know). Hardly surprisingly, those in the “performance” teams are doers. Some may achieve their goals themselves. Those are found in the Executing domain. Others then attain their goals through motivating and galvanising others (the Influencing domain). Certainly, this labelling is a wee bit reductive, and so is dividing the world into thinkers and doers. In due course, I may add another layer to render a slightly more complex view. Anyway, thank you for inspiration, Monsieur Saussure | #ideation #input

Meet Career Linguist, Karen Tsai, PhD, one of our past Career Campers who received her PhD in Linguistics at UC Santa Barbara. She is currently a Language Data Researcher at Amazon. “As a Language Data Researcher at Amazon, I work on improving Alexa by researching linguistic errors in Alexa’s language understanding. I use linguistics every day to diagnose patterns and variations in language data, query large language data sets, synthesize qualitative and quantitative analyses, and communicate findings with non-linguists.” If you're interested in learning more about Karen's work as a linguist, follow her on LinkedIn! ______________ At Career Linguist, it has been our goal to create a community that linguists can advocate and support each other in the world of work. #Linguist?#Linguistics?#DataAnalyst?#DataScience

?? Exploring the Depths of Linguistics: A Love Letter to Language ?? As I reflect on my journey through the intricate labyrinth of linguistics, I can't help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude and passion for this captivating field. ???? Linguistics isn't just about deciphering the structures and sounds of languages; it's a voyage into the very essence of human communication and cognition. Through my studies, I've delved deep into the workings of the human brain, unraveling the mysterious pathways that shape our understanding and expression of language. One of the most fascinating aspects of linguistics is its interdisciplinary nature. It intertwines seamlessly with psychology, neuroscience, anthropology, computer science, and more, offering a multifaceted perspective on the complexities of language. From syntax to semantics, phonetics to pragmatics, every facet of language reveals a new layer of insight into the human experience. It's through linguistics that we uncover the nuances of culture, identity, and society encoded within the words we speak and the languages we cherish. But perhaps what truly ignites my passion for linguistics is its endless capacity for discovery. With each linguistic puzzle I unravel, I find myself drawn deeper into the enigmatic tapestry of human communication, forever humbled by the vastness of linguistic diversity and the ingenuity of the human mind. As I continue on this journey, I am grateful for the opportunity to share my love for linguistics with fellow enthusiasts and scholars alike. Together, let us celebrate the beauty of language and the boundless possibilities it holds for understanding ourselves and the world around us. #Linguistics #Language #Communication #Cognition #Interdisciplinary #Discoveries #Passion #Gratitude #HumanExperience
