In my life there have been a handful of defining moments where my belief was bigger than what I was burdened to overcome. ? Blackweek is one of these moments. ? My fellow founders and myself could have taken the easy way out, and chose not to put ourselves, our careers and the businesses we built at risk.? We could have listened to the dozens of people who told us we were crazy, or it wouldn’t work, or those that questioned why we decided to call it Blackweek, or those who chose to sit this year out and see what would happen.? I will admit there were moments where I reconsidered why I was doing this.? Whether it be the current political climate, the constant attacks on DE&I, and what hurts the most is when people who look like you, that you’ve known for years, that have the power to help you, turn their back.? However, instead of caving, we all found the strength to double down, because my mother told me when so many people want you to lose, that’s when you know you're doing something worth doing. The change in our industry will come at a cost.? The question we all have to ask ourselves, is what cost are we all willing to pay for the opportunity for a more inclusive industry, that actually is good for business.?? Blackweek proved that it has a place in the marketing Zeitgeist.? It proved that Black and brown people can produce an elevated experience that can attract the biggest names in the industry to offer compelling insights that can drive real business results.?? I couldn’t be more proud of this moment, I couldn’t be more proud of how everyone showed up.? It felt surreal.? It truly felt utopian, like what our industry should feel like.? My commitment to this industry is renewed and the fight in me has been magnified, because I have now experienced what the industry should be, and will strive to ensure it mirrors the values of what Blackweek exhibited.? ?? Celebrating a huge, and slightly surreal, milestone ?? Three years ago, I started a project with the launch of Belong at BHX4. Fast forward 18 months, and it has transformed into the Give, Grow, and Belong initiative that it is today, encompassing all of our community engagement, career development, and equity, diversity and inclusion work. Here's some highlights of our journey so far: ?? Give: In the past 18 months, we've organized 35+ volunteering events, contributing over 600 hours to local community projects. From gardening to event stewarding, and even bike repairs, we've made a huge difference. We also supported over 20 charities with cash donations and launched a book donation scheme, gifting 10 school libraries around Coventry with hundreds of books. ?? Grow: Our mentorship program pairs T1 Associates with Senior Leaders, offering invaluable career guidance. We've hosted career fairs featuring diverse business line leaders, external training sessions on truck driving and coding, and conducted CV workshops and interview prep, resulting in countless internal promotions. ?? Belong: We've successfully launched all of our Affinity Groups on site, including the succesful launch of our Arabs at Amazon chapter. Our Affinity Fair helped our team connect with our communities and our new contemplation and wellness rooms have created spaces for connection, reflection, and support, especially during significant times like Ramadan and Mental Health Awareness Week. Seeing Give, Grow, and Belong become integral to our site's core values and now part of BHX4’s logo is a testament of our commitment to community engagement, personal growth, and belonging. Goodwill Industries of NEI is DOMINATING community connection. Last month we added in my sister station WOWO News Talk, to help spread education on how our 8 local Goodwill stores are impacting our community. We came up with the strategy to connect our listeners to Goodwill through asking them to nominate individuals they know who are an example of “goodwill” and actions to those around them, and thus “Goodwill In Action” was born ?We just chose our winner for the month of December, Amy, but man was it tough. There were so many nominations from listeners that highlighted community members that are going above and beyond to make this a better place to live work and play! It was tough choosing a winner for December, but read what the person who nominated her had to say, and you’ll see why Amy won. Creating these campaigns that actually mean something and connect others, is what makes this career the best!
