New Year's resolutions are easy to make but hard to keep. In fact, 80% of resolutions are broken before mid-February. If you make resolutions about planning for college, your timeline isn't long enough to break them. Here are a few you can make and keep: ?? Increase your monthly savings rate. Adding $10 to your monthly contribution every year on your child's birthday would mean about $15,000 in extra savings when they're ready for college. ?? Do the Student Aid Estimator on the Education Department's website. This will show you what types of scholarships you're eligible for-- need- or merit-based-- so you can plan your college search accordingly. ?? Any time your student mentions a college they're interested in, do its Net Price Calculator. ?? Research merit scholarships at your in-state schools and how you qualify-- weighted vs unweighted GPA, test scores, are they granted automatically or do you need to apply? ?? Have a conversation with your student about your family's college budget. Happy 2025!
