If there's one thing Black folks throughout the #AfricanDiaspora excel at, it's offering insightful commentary. Celebrating our creative genius is fantastic, but I can think of 40 more impactful ways to honor #Juneteenth sustainably (hint, hint). If you’re someone who wants to meaningfully honor Juneteenth and avoid appearing out of touch, like Joe Biden at a cookout, here are some questions to reflect on: * Will this day off be different from other days off? * Do I have a deep understanding of why this holiday exists? * Am I informed by those with lived experience about the significance of this day? * Do I have resources to support those still affected by the legacy of Chattel Slavery? * Who am I listening to and learning from about #BlackAmerican history? * Am I aware of the diversity within the African Diaspora, understanding that while the history of enslavement impacts many, not all Black people are descendants of enslaved people? Feel free to share in the comments how you plan to meaningfully observe Juneteenth without looking like Joe Biden at the proverbial cookout! (lol) If you’re still looking for a thoughtful learning engagement feel free to check out the comments to learn more about my upcoming virtual workshop: Honoring Juneteenth: Seeking Reparative Justice*, on Saturday, June 15th from 11 AM (CDT). #Juneteenth2024 #RacialJustice #EquityAndInclusion #BlackExcellence #ReparativeJustice #DiversityMatters #SocialJustice #InclusiveWorkplace #VirtualWorkshop #ProfessionalDevelopment

It marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. In the US, February is Black Achievement Month. A rich and welcoming initiative that offers daily inspiration for meaningful actions is the Liberation Table, which has been inspired in many ways by our Keti Koti Tafel. I recommend taking a look at their initiative and guide, as it might inspire your celebation as well - check out the calendar for today's suggestion. Some years ago, Mercedes Zandwijken and I published a piece in which we proposed our dialogue table as a 'Juneteenth haggadah': a version of the Jewish passover celebration to comemmorate the abolition of slavery in a meaningful way. A motivated and creative group of black women - Benie N'Sumbu, Faith Zamble, Hillary Bridges, and Samantha Sims - had been inspired by our Keti Koti Table and developed in recent years their own version, which has become the Liberation Table. It consists also of a series of rituals and a symbolic meal that is shared by participants, like ours. What appears to be different is the role for interpersonal dialogue across the color line, that we've put central as a way to address the joined colonial and slavery legacy, which is not the case in the Liberation Table. The latter seems particularly aimed at the circle of family and friends, and is perhaps more similar to the Jewish passover table in that sense. Obviously, each context and aim can benefit from a tailored approach like this one - so you can yourself develop your own idiosyncratic version! https://lnkd.in/edC7y5QD Publication on the Keti Koti Table as a Juneteenth Haggadah: https://lnkd.in/exN_JBer #blackhistorymonth #ketikotitable #liberationtable #dialogue #juneteenth #abolition

Today, we honor Juneteenth, a day that marks a pivotal moment in American history. On June 19, 1865, over 250,000 enslaved people in Texas were finally freed, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day, also known as Freedom Day, is a reminder of the enduring struggle for justice and equality. As we celebrate, let us remember the significance of Juneteenth and its legacy of resilience and hope. Never forget the importance of this day and let us all continue to celebrate the progress that's been made. Read more: https://lnkd.in/g4EX_uUD

My Highlight Of The Week is from Morgan Freeman who talks about his issue with Black History Month: https://lnkd.in/eNXFjpPM The 18th of July marks the start of South Asian Heritage Month. I see colleagues celebrating and sharing their personal stories and those of the diaspora. I share many of their experiences. The goal of the month by the founder and colleague Dr Binita Kane is for the month not to exist. This I do not understand: how can you celebrate and educate heritage but not want to do this. If the goal is inclusion of South Asians into society, does celebrating our “otherness” seek to divide us from the rest of society? The balance between being proud of our identity and feeling at one with others is very fine. I think it’s important to define what success is with anything in life. Those in health inequalities spaces must define the exact moment when health equality is achieved. With heritage months, we must define what success is. If integration is the goal, when will integration be achieved? One of is his arguments are rooted in that Black History is American history and implies that celebrating Black History in a single month is tokenistic. Similarly South Asian heritage is British heritage: why would we celebrate it in a month? Some would say it’s not celebrated anyway - so this is our space to celebrate. His other argument suggests countering that educating people about Black History would not decrease racism. It’s hard to know if that’s true in the USA or the UK. However, I do think that those that are curious about other people’s ethnic background are a self-selecting bunch. The people who do not care about other people cannot be educated so I wonder whether this in fact is multiplying another kind of inverse-care law. The inverse-care law implies that those who need the most care are least likely to access that care, e.g. the poorest / marginalised in society. Similarly, those are in need of most education about different people’s journeys in life are least likely to care. Altogether I’m confused about South Asian Heritage month but one thing is for certain. I deeply proud of the sacrifices that my ancestors made for me to have such a great life with simple pleasures. I am proud of where I come from in the UK and beyond (it’s complicated). But, we must not forget how we as humans are more similar, than different.

?????? JUNETEENTH ?????? Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, a significant day in American history that marks the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended and that enslaved individuals were now free — two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Juneteenth symbolizes the triumph of freedom over oppression, resilience over adversity, and unity over division. It serves as a poignant reminder of the progress we've made towards equality and justice, while also highlighting the ongoing work needed to achieve true racial equity. As we celebrate Juneteenth, let us reflect on the sacrifices and contributions of African Americans throughout history. Let us reaffirm our commitment to fostering inclusive workplaces and communities where everyone has equal opportunities to thrive. Together, we can build a future that honors diversity, embraces equity, and upholds the values of freedom and justice for all.
