Cadillac Appears to Waver On EV Commitment: Nearly all of the top automakers selling vehicles in the U.S. have announced aggressive electrification plans that include shifting a majority of their production and sales efforts to EVs over the next decade. Such long-term plans are difficult on their own, but adding Americans’ polarized politics and unique driving culture to the mix has proven exceptionally challenging, even for companies with deep pockets and the most talented engineers. General Motors recently softened its stance, opting to produce more hybrids to fill the EV demand gap, and Cadillac now seems to be following its parent company’s lead. #car #cars #awesome

The about-face comes after key dealers pushed GM to send them hybrids since demand for EVs hasn’t been as electric as expected, per the WSJ. Despite government incentives and automakers betting big on battery-powered cars… Many drivers are put off by EVs’ priciness and worried about the lack of charging stations. Though EV sales grew 52% last quarter from Q4 2022, per Cox Automotive, many carmakers slashed prices and cut EV production goals as unsold cars began collecting dust in dealer lots. Meanwhile, hybrids have been selling like hotcakes, helping GM’s competitor and the world’s biggest carmaker, Toyota, rake in record profits.

Dealer Groups are Up In Arms About Potential for Scout and Sony Afeela to Sell Cars Directly to Buyers: Dealers are often the first group to sound concerns when something changes in the auto industry, whether they’re justified in their complaints or not. Most recently, a state dealer association created an ad asking Volkswagen Group and Sony Honda Mobility not to sell their upcoming EVs outside of the existing dealer network over concerns the new divisions could follow Tesla and Rivian in selling directly to buyers. #car #cars #awesome

Hard to believe, but true. For some years now, carmakers have been clearly showing their intention to electrify their ranges, and even to offer only 100% electric vehicles by 2030. Notably Mercedes-Benz, who had launched their major EQ project, aimed at hybridizing or electrifying their range. We've seen the discontinuation of certain models and engines, especially from Mercedes' Sport/Performance division: AMG. The legendary 4.8-liter V8 Biturbo was retired last year, notably on the C class and E class ranges, to become a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder coupled with an electric motor and a 6.1kWh battery pack. Hybrid motorization, then, being far more powerful on paper (2023 version: 510hp / 2024 version: 671). However, it seems that sales have been catastrophic for the German company. So much so, in fact, that the company has decided to put the EQ project on hold, or at least put the brakes on development of the top-of-the-range models. A new model, the CLE 63 AMG, is due to be announced shortly. Initially planned to use the same engine structure as the C and E class AMG, it would appear that the manufacturer decided to change its plans at the last minute. Indeed, the legendary 4.8-liter V8 Biturbo is set to make a comeback, much to the delight of fans. Mercedes has yet to issue an official statement, so it's best not to get overexcited, but I'd advise keeping your eyes open. It will be interesting to see what impact this change might have on sales, both in Europe and the USA, but also in Asia. Thank you for taking the time to read me.

Stellantis PLAN....to fully electrify their Chrysler and Alfa Romeo brands by 2028 and 2027 brands respectively. Will it revive either, after decades of struggle?? Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram brands have been in the news recently, for their dismal performance versus the market. Dealers are NOT happy and for good reason. Alfa Romeo and Chrysler all-electric strategy is a huge gamble, same for others including GEELY's Group Lotus, Polestar, others. Volvo Cars has backed off it's 2030 all-in EV deadline, shifting to hybrid options. It's a shame, given Alfa's history and attractive product in the past, but they MUST improve quality dramatically. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares has emphasized that EVs will have to be affordable for the middle class and said "around $25,000" is the sweet spot. Moving to this price point will be low margin, but opens the door to brands not currently under buyer consideration. Getting to that price point with enough required product content/features will be a MAJOR challenge, along with current infrastructure/other BEV challenges. Super Bowl EV ADS At a reported $7 million for 30 seconds, 3 Automakers, BMW, KIA and VW, are advertising their continued Electric commitment during Super Bowl 2024. 2023 saw the same $7 million figure for 30 seconds and included GM, Jeep and Ram. 2022 sought $6.5 mil/ 30 sec and was a very good year for electric vehicles with 6 EV promotions from BMW, Chevy, GM, KIA, Nissan & Polestar. 2021 demanded $5.5 Mil for 30 seconds to showcase these 6 EV-making automakers: Aud, Ford, General Motors, Kia, Nissan & Toyota. It’s great to see them being advertised, but it looks like we are moving backward in the excitement for electric vehicles. Notably missing is GM from this year’s expected lineup. What SHOULDN’T be missing is Tesla promoting the Cybertruck. I think people’s minds would be ?? Go electric ??? I learned from a YouTube video today that a Porsche dealership's official labor rate is now $300 per hour (in FL). This is a big contributing factor to why a 3 year old BMW 7 series car (new = $100K) with perfect history and 20,000 miles costs the same used as many used Toyotas with similar history, except they were $50K new. Capital destruction on a large scale. Let's be clear: dealerships make far more profit off repairs than they do selling the car. They have a clear financial incentive to create unreliable cars.
