Oxygen Minimum Zones, or OMZs, are areas in the water column with less oxygen, primarily due to naturally occurring physical and biological processes within the Ocean. The core of the OMZ is anoxic, making them inhospitable to most large animals, yet microbes have adapted to live and thrive in this oxygen-starved environment. During the #OxygenMinimumMicrobes Expedition, an international team of researchers is working in the eastern tropical South Pacific off the coast of Chile. They strive to deepen our scientific knowledge of OMZs, which have substantial ecological significance, and this research will help us to predict and understand the future health of the ocean, our atmosphere, and the humans who depend on these resources for survival. I proudly share that my first, first-author scientific paper, together with Arjan Gittenberger (GIMARIS), was published in MDPI's Diversity (MDPI)! Link: https://lnkd.in/e5pVP7Qu The article indicates that approximately 70% of newly detected non-native marine species manage to establish themselves. This is mostly based on data throughout Europe. The percentage seems applicable to various species assemblages, climate zones, and geographical locations. Therefore, we propose the Seventies Rule as a preliminary indicator to predict establishment successes of newly detected species.

This research cruise, led by Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) and funded by NERC: Natural Environment Research Council’s National Capability, is a highly important expedition for the marine science community as it collects samples along the length of the Atlantic, producing a unique dataset and the opportunity to monitor changes in this expansive ocean.

A new study from SCCF, the University of Florida, and Florida International University found that phytoplankton communities in the Caloosahatchee River near Lake Okeechobee were more diverse — including two dinoflagellate species new to Florida and several new to science — during periods without Lake O releases entering the river. Our October Luncheon guest speaker is Marine Biologist John A. Lewis who will be speaking on the topic 'Battling Barnacles, Biofouling and Biosecurity: Insights into risk, regulation and reality'. Since the time humans first launched vessels to sail along coasts and across seas, those boat hulls became the welcome home for many species that were able to survive the stresses of a peripatetic lifestyle. Mention of marine growth slowing down, or even stopping ships dates to the 4thC BCE, and the use of preventative treatments back to 400 BCE. Antifouling paints were first formulated in the late 1800s and, particularly those containing copper, remain the mainstay for biofouling management. Apart from the continuing efforts to extend the effective lives of antifouling coatings and, in parallel, reduce the use of biocides, concerns were raised in the late 1990s that ship biofouling was a major vector for the global spread of invasive marine species. The ballast water carried on international ships was, at that time, already recognized as a significant vector, but the focus turned to biofouling. The precautionary principle set a national and international regulatory train in motion, and down a track seemingly immune from scientific evidence and practicality. This talk will provide an overview of the multidisciplinary complexities of this issue and how perceptions and political agendas can override scientific sense and sensibility. This #TechTuesday, scientists are seeing red because the configurable aft deck on R/V Falkor (too) allows them to bring just the right tools for meeting their scientific objectives. During the #OxygenMinimumMicrobes expedition, the Chilean science team brought a customized mobile laboratory built for oceanographic studies; it allows researchers to conduct experiments under controlled conditions. For example, water can be pumped directly into the portable lab using a pump profiling system for continuous high-resolution measurements of things like nutrients in the water. Dim red light is needed to work with light-sensitive microbes, such as phytoplankton because it possesses lower energy compared to white light or light of shorter wavelengths. Red light facilitates the setup of experiments in which microbes will be exposed to specific light intensities, and it is maintained at a very low intensity to minimize photosynthetic activity during the experiment setup. To characterize the microorganisms living in Oxygen Minimum Zones, or OMZs, in the Ocean, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Microbiologist and Expedition Chief Scientist Dr. Maria Pachiadaki and her team are testing new instruments in the Eastern Tropical Pacific OMZ. Data collected during this expedition will help create better regional models to predict what will happen to OMZs as the climate changes.
