Next week, Francesco Scalogna, our chemical process engineeer and Jonas Gossen, our data scientist for chemical Life Cycles?are heading to Seville for the SETAC Europe 34th Annual Meeting from May 5-9th! Under this year's theme, "Science-based Solutions in Times of Crisis: Integrating Science and Policy for Environmental Challenges," the conference will spotlight the need for innovative, science-based solutions to tackle our post-pandemic world's environmental challenges. ??At the conference, Francesco and Jonas will be presenting their posters on these exciting themes: ? Jonas will present "Solving LCI data gaps for fine chemicals by retrosynthesis for industrially relevant reactions," focusing on the use of retrosynthesis software to automate reaction pathway predictions. Overall, this approach facilitates access to secondary data and closes LCI data gaps in the Life Cycle Assessment of fine chemicals. ? Francesco will present our cm.chemicals database under the title "How highly specific LCA data can?inform purchasing decisions that?significantly reduce climate impacts?in the chemical value chain" ? Excellent work Madeline Rihner and Jacob Whittle!! A very nice contribution to the conference exploring the effect of allocation of by-products via a multi-sector LCA of low carbon steel and cement production on the UK. TL;DR - shifts towards more sustainable practices (lower carbon emissions) in one sector (i.e. steel) can have a serious (and sometimes negative) knock-on environmental and economic effects in another sector (i.e. cement)

A pristine example of innovation addressing this issue comes from a new study titled "A high-performance ionic liquid-based microextraction, ILBME, method for the trace determination of paroxetine as a pharmaceutical pollutant in environmental and biological samples," published in Analytical Chemistry. The study introduces an efficient and precise method for detecting and quantifying trace amounts of paroxetine, a widely used antidepressant that has been increasingly identified as a pollutant in various environmental and biological matrices. This research employs an advanced ionic liquid-based microextraction technique, harnessing the unique properties of ionic liquids to enhance the selectivity and sensitivity necessary for detecting minute quantities of pharmaceuticals in complex samples. The use of #ionicliquids in this context is particularly promising due to their non-volatile, non-flammable, and highly tunable nature, which makes them ideal for applications in #analyticalchemistry. By improving the ability to detect pharmaceutical residues at trace levels, this method paves the way for more effective environmental monitoring and risk assessment of pharmaceutical contamination.
