NOT SHAMEFUL TO REMEMBER Memories of war enable our society to remember the past, to express appreciation to those who sacrificed their lives and willingly served our country. At the same time we also need to acknowledge and accept that on occasions, events and happenings from the past, which would be considered unnecessary today, occurred for significant and highly acceptable reasons. Those of us today should never feel guilt nor shame for these actions, which some are constantly demanding that we do. This is why we, as Australians, come together every ANZAC Day. We do it to commemorate the ANZAC’s and their achievements: we should remember them though, not as old soldiers from a forgotten war, but as the young Australians each of them were in 1915, when they left our shores to defend Australia. Remembering moments from our history allows us as a society to learn from them and to move forward in a positive and determined manner. We cannot change history and nor should we, but we can and should learn from it. Australians young and old, will always remember them.

The Reconquista, also known as the Iberian Crusades, unfolded through a series of military endeavors spanning from the 11th to the 13th century AD, aimed at reclaiming southern Portuguese and Spanish territories, then referred to as al-Andalus, from the Muslim Moors who had held them since the 8th century AD. Originating from North Africa, the Muslim Moors had conquered the majority of the Iberian peninsula in the early 8th century AD, displacing the Visigoths who had controlled the region. By the 11th century AD, the Christian kingdoms in northern Spain gained strength, prompting efforts to recapture lost territories. The internal strife within the Cordoba Caliphate in 1031 AD further facilitated these ambitions. The key participants included Aragon, Catalonia, Castile, León, and Navarre, while Portugal emerged as an independent state in the 1140s AD. The conflicts not only involved battles against the Muslims but also internal struggles, turning Spain into a mosaic of small kingdoms. Independent figures like Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, El Cid, seized opportunities amid the political chaos, exemplified by his establishment of a short-lived kingdom at Valencia in 1094 AD. The introduction of the Almoravids, a fundamentalist sect from Morocco, added complexity to the Muslim side in the 1080s AD. The term "Reconquista" emerged to describe this process, claiming to 'reconquer' territories lost by the Visigoths four centuries earlier. Seems that the formulation of a "Community.. ." is in order.
According to Moreau de Saint-Méry, the following quote is attributed to none other than the great King Henry Christophe: “Henry [First of His Name], by the Grace of God and the Constitutional Law of the State, King of Haiti, Sovereign of Tortuga, Gonave and other adjacent Islands, Destroyer of Tyranny, Regenerator and Benefactor of the Haitian Nation, Creator of Her Moral, Political and Martial Institutions, First Crowned Monarch of the New World, Defender of the Faith, and Founder of the Royal and Military Order of Saint-Henry.” Sounds like something from Games of Thrones, doesn’t it? So next time you hear this fictitious royal bragging about her accomplishments, “Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, The Unburnt, Queen of Meereen, Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Protector of the Realm, Lady Regent of the Seven Kingdoms, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons.” think of our real King Christophe, who actually accomplished a lot for his subjects. Haitians don’t have to pretend. We did world-changing shit! Let’s do it again. We have the blueprints and receipts!

During the Third Punic War, Carthage, fortified with extensive defenses, staunchly resisted the Roman siege. Carthage boasted an impressive 34 km of defensive walls, with some sections organized into a triple defensive line and other areas protected by palisades, ditches, and the sea. These fortifications proved insurmountable for the Romans, who were unable to fully blockade the port, allowing merchant vessels to continue supplying the city. In addition, the Carthaginians launched sorties, including fire-ships that set the Roman fleet ablaze. In another raid, they successfully destroyed some of the Roman siege engines. Simultaneously, the Carthaginian army offered determined resistance in the surrounding countryside. The city of Hippacra, despite sustained Roman attacks led by Consul Piso, refused to surrender. Even the Numidians, under their new king Bithyas, sent 800 cavalry to reinforce the Carthaginian land forces. The Romans had initially hoped for a swift and uncomplicated surrender, but it was becoming apparent that the Third Punic War might escalate to the epic proportions of its predecessors. With the situation growing more dire, drastic measures were taken in 147 BC. Under the command of the capable Consul Publius Cornelius Scipio Aemilianus, the Romans constructed a more formidable siege wall around Carthage and its harbor. This defensive effort included the construction of a mole on the south side of the city, which effectively blocked the sole access to Carthage's commercial harbor, leading to the large circular inner naval harbor. This strategic move prevented Carthage from receiving supplies by sea. In a desperate attempt to break the blockade, a small Carthaginian fleet made two unsuccessful efforts to sail through a newly created second harbor exit, resulting in their retreat. #mylineage?#ancient?#armor?#battle?#brasidas?#europeanhistory?#greece?#greek?#greekwarfare?#helmet?#historia?#historical?#history?#hoplite?#platea?#leonidas?#lysander?#mediterranean?#hannibal?#military?#militaryhistory?#shield?#sparta?#spartan?#hannibalbarca?#alexander?#warhistorical?#warhistory?#warrior?#warriorhistory https://lnkd.in/gRwWAUEy

The Hundred Years' War was a lengthy conflict between the kings of France and England. Beginning in 1337 and lasting until 1453, the war endured for 116 years, with periods of peace interspersed between bouts of fighting. Interestingly, the name "Hundred Years' War" was coined much later, in the 19th century, to describe this extended conflict. Historians traditionally divide the war into three main phases: 1. The Edwardian War (1337-1360) during the reign of Edward III of England. 2. The Caroline War (1369-1389) during the rule of Charles V of France. 3. The Lancastrian War (1415-1453) named after the Lancasters, the royal house of England. The war began principally because King Edward III (r. 1327-1377) and Philip VI (r. 1328-1350) escalated a dispute over feudal rights in Gascony to a battle for the French Crown. However, the causes of the Hundred Years' War were multifaceted and evolved as different monarchs ruled. Some key factors include: - The seizure of English-held Gascony (Aquitaine, in southwest France) by Philip VI of France. - Edward III of England's claim to the French throne through his mother. - Edward III's military expeditions to expand English territories, protect trade routes, and acquire land for his nobles. - Charles V of France's ambition to remove English influence from French territories. - The internal conflicts and power struggles within the French nobility, exacerbated by the madness of Charles VI of France. - Henry V of England's desire to legitimize his rule in England and assert himself as the king of France through conquest. - The determination of the Dauphin, future King Charles VII of France, to reclaim his rightful inheritance and unify France under his rule. #mylineage?#armor?#armour?#europeanhistory?#heraldry?#militaryhistory?#medievalwar?#medievalhistory?#medievaltimes?#medievalworld?#middleages?#kinghenry?#kingofengland?#emperor?#Barbarossa?#crusades?#charlemagne?#westfrancia?#kingedward?#knights?#HolyRomanEmpire?#medievalarmor?#warriorhistory?#medieval?#medievalchivalry?#edwardtheblackprince?#Kingdom?#henryvi?#medievalknight?#coatofarms https://lnkd.in/g___DENT
