We have learned a lot about the physiological responses to heat stress from studying the time-honored practice of sauna culture in Finland. Finland consistently ranks as the happiest country on earth and this small nation of just over 5M people also boasts one of the longest healthy life expectancies (HALE) at 60 years, leading some to propose that sauna culture is the cornerstone of Finnish health and wellness. But, does the research back this up? In the acute setting, both exercise and sauna raise the body’s core temperature, which results in a substantial redistribution of blood to the skin to facilitate sweating. Happy Fourth of July! ???? While celebrating our nation's independence, let's also celebrate our health and well-being! Here are some naturopathic tips to enjoy a healthy and balanced holiday: ?? Stay Hydrated: Drink at least half your body weight in ounces (150 lbs= 75 oz) throughout the day, especially if you're out in the sun. Consider adding a squeeze of lemon for an extra detox boost! ???? ??Healthy Grilled Choices: Opt for grilled veggies, and lean proteins, and best to go with a gluten-free bun (choose a brand with minimal ingredients), or protein style, on two large pieces of lettuce. Include some fresh, colorful salads to balance out your plate. ??Sun and Vitamin D: The sun is a fantastic source for Vitamin D, a building block of hormone & cholesterol, helps with mood and protects against inflammation. Something that we should get regularly! If you plan on being out for a while though, check out @taspensorganics for natural sun block, one of my faves. Perhaps style your outfit too with your favorite pair of sunglasses! ???? ??Mindful Eating: Enjoy your favorite treats, but listen to your body's hunger and fullness cues. Savor each bite, chew your food at least 31 times, and have fun! ??Stay Active: Take a walk, play a game of frisbee, or dance to your favorite tunes. Movement helps boost your mood and digestion. ??Relax and Unwind: Amidst the festivities, or even before or after, take a moment for yourself.
