A small neighborhood. That's what they call it. With the vast number of carpenters in Chicago. The old-school millwork guys distinguished themselves. They were a small neighborhood. As a big city made up of many named neighborhoods this term held weight. Although small, this group is made up of some of the city's biggest characters. How do you become a part of the small neighborhood? There is no official voting. There is no secret handshake. There is an initiation process to become a part of it. A place in the small neighborhood is earned. Earned by proving your skills, and ability to problem solve. By showing your ability to get along and work together. Proving your solid character. Telling great stories at break and lunch helps too. The benefits, a yearly party, and a phone call if they need you on their project or if they are looking for work. The biggest benefit is being a part of a group. Just like any good neighborhood. I had fought like hell to get there so, I'll never forget when the word "We" was added and it became. ?????? GROWTH AND OPPORTUNITY: Planting Seeds and Watering Them ?????? I had an incredible opportunity today to represent both the North Atlantic States Carpenter Training Fund and Turner Construction, and I wanted to share my experience with all of you. It was a moment that truly emphasized the power of growth and opportunity, and how they can only materialize when we plant seeds and water them. Today, I had the privilege of joining the Chelsea Collaborative and MBK 617 (pre apprenticeships) on a tour of Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain. Our goal was to enlighten and inspire pre-apprentices about the various phases of construction they could be involved in, should they choose to pursue a career as union carpenters. As we walked through the hospital, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and possibility in the air. The pre-apprentices were eager to learn and absorb everything they could about the construction industry. It was a beautiful sight to witness their curiosity and passion. During our tour, we discussed the importance of planting seeds by acquiring the necessary skills and knowledge. We emphasized the value of education and training, as these are the seeds that lay the foundation for growth and success. We encouraged the pre-apprentices to seize every opportunity to learn and grow, knowing that their efforts will be rewarded in the future. But planting seeds is just the first step. To ensure growth and opportunity, we must also water these seeds with support and mentorship. We must create an environment where these pre-apprentices can flourish and thrive. That's where organizations like Chelsea Collaborative and MBK617 come in - they provide the necessary resources, guidance, and support to help individuals reach their full potential. The experience at Faulkner Hospital reminded me of the immense power we have to shape the future. By investing in the next generation and empowering them with the tools they need, we are not just building structures, but also creating opportunities for personal and professional growth. So, let's continue to plant seeds of knowledge, skills, and opportunities. Let's water them with support, mentorship, and guidance. I will be starting a series every Tuesday titled "Why Far South Chicago", which will highlight area amenities; past, current, and proposed development projects; area facts and figures; planning initiatives; housing and environmental justice; health and wellness; workforce and education; area achievements; and people, organizations, and businesses. This is to make the case to municipal leaders, business industries, and existing and potential residents that Far South Chicago (or Greater Calumet Chicago) is and should be Chicago's most significant Economic Growth and Investment Area and not just downtown and its collar neighborhoods. Proximity to downtown should not determine an area's value or level of investment. Tuesday's Edition Feature: Workforce and Education Olive Harvey College's Electric Car Apprenticeship Program Ever since Chicago made Olive Harvey College (OHC) the Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics (TDL) Training Hub, the Far South Chicago area remains the central area for training a steady workforce hub for area companies. OHC continues to break barriers offering job opportunities for the future in the fast-growing emerging green economy by servicing electric vehicles. Electric vehicle owners and manufacturers should consider Chicago's far south side in their decision to locate all or parts of their supply chain near the workforce.
