At G.E.A.R., we know sports teach more than skills—they teach life lessons. However, for many, Pay-to-Play fees and lack of gear stand in the way. The Detroit Pistons partnered with G.E.A.R. to make a life-changing donation to Battle Creek's Midnight League, a program offering a safe, structured environment for young adults from 8 p.m. to midnight. With only 8 jerseys and 1 basketball, this program was struggling. Thanks to the Pistons' donation, they now have the gear they need to continue their life-saving work. Recently, Battle Creek lost 3 young lives to street violence—proof that programs like this are vital. The importance of this type of initiative was further demonstrated today when the Food Banks Canada released their Hungercount (2024https://lnkd.in/gzqYujhp) report. In Canada, there are now over 2 Million visits to food banks/month. A shocking number and double the number of visits that were happening monthly only 5 years ago. Also many shelters are reporting running out of food. While contributing money to this cause is not the long term solution, it will help to bridge the gap to the time when sustainable solutions are put in place.

The COVID-19 pandemic, despite its many challenges, highlighted the incredible resilience and generosity of our communities. The pandemic promoted a sense that the decline in giving could be reversed as our communities stepped in to fill the gap. In 2020, total charitable giving reached an all-time high of $471 billion, fueled by pandemic relief efforts and support for racial justice in the wake of the protests over the murder of George Floyd. Notably, the number of micro-donations (under $100) grew for the first time in three years, demonstrating that even small acts of generosity can make a significant impact.
