Day2 of #BridgesScotland 2024, afternoon session:
Chris Starke, Bridge Engineer at BEAR Scotland, and Craig Hunter, Project Manager at Balfour Beatty plc, presented the ongoing replacement of the Kincardine Bridge Southern Piled Viaduct:
- The Kincardine Bridge consists of multiple connected spans with an 80m long piled viaduct at its southern end
- an 1984 assessment determined the viaduct section was substandard in design, the viaduct was subsequently monitored
- a steel propping system was installed in 1992 to provide interim structural support
- In 2023, a £16.8 million contract to replace the piled viaduct was awarded to Balfour Beatty; BEAR Scotland is overseeing the project on behalf of Transport Scotland; the detailed design was carried out by Jacobs
- the south viaduct section was demolished and replaced with a completely new reinforced concrete structure cast in situ to replicate the look of the original grade A listed structure ??the new viaduct is similar in appearance to adjacent spans on the original bridge
- a temporary bridge running alongside the original helped keep traffic flowing and minimise disruption to the traveling public during #construction
- the project required custom bearings
- works on site to remove the temporary bridge, complete the new viaduct and reinstate the site are expected to continue until Spring 2025
