It’s the American Institute for Conservation & Foundation for Advancement in Conservation's Ask A Conservator Day. Ask A Conservator Day began in remembrance of the 1966 flooding of Florence, where generations worth of design, artistry, and craftsmanship were damaged and to this day are still undergoing conservation efforts. We have CANY’s conservators, Xsusha Arogunmati, Director of Architectural Conservation, and Alafia Akhtar, Senior Architectural Conservator, in the hot seat. ? What inspired you to pursue conservation? XA: I’ve always had an affinity for art, tools and buildings. When I found out that architectural conservation was a career (when I was 26) I jumped into getting my degree. AA: I've always loved art, architecture and working with my hands. I knew that I wanted to be in a field that allowed for a creative outlet. What has been your most challenging project to date and why? XA: A museum undergoing a 91-million-dollar interior and exterior restoration. The interior and exterior are historic and everything had to be documented before, during and after treatment. There was an entire team of conservators specializing in different areas of conservation (paintings, metals, objects etc.) that we had to coordinate with along with the general contractors doing the work. So many moving parts! AA: I worked on a building in Gramercy Park that had a multitude of issues and continuous moving parts. Figuring out the different repair methodologies for each type of material and repair area, which included understanding material science and how each type of type of material interacts adjacent to another, was important in developing a repair strategy. What has been your most memorable project? XA: Probably the same project mentioned above. I got to spend several nights with one or two other conservators and a security guard in the museum. The museum used to be mansion and I liked feeling like I was hanging out with the former residents. Getting in on that Gilded Age action and feeling so much more connected to the history and importance of the building. AA: A current project where we are working on the repair of a school that is comprised of two historic mansions of prominent New York figure at the turn of the century. The project has required testing of materials to better develop repairs as well as the implementation of general preservation knowledge in order to properly perform the required work. ? #AskAConservator #CANY #nyc #nycarchitecture #buildingconservation #architecture

In restoration projects, every detail matters, especially architectural ironmongery, these can be the elements that are the bridge between preserving the past and embracing the present. Whether it's restoring the original charm of a historic building or updating it with modern functionality while respecting its heritage, the right ironmongery is key. From ornate period door handles to authentic hinges and locks, selecting the right pieces helps maintain the building's character and authenticity. Along with restoration, our team can replicate existing designs from original pieces, photos or drawings, even designing pieces from scratch to reflect the historical period. For our team, it's not simply about renovation, it's about honouring history while crafting a future.

You might think a "Ha-Ha Wall" sounds amusing, but it’s actually a clever and historic landscape design feature! Originating from 18th-century England, the Ha-Ha Wall is a concealed barrier that creates a seamless transition between manicured lawns and the natural countryside, without obstructing views. How does it work? The wall sits within a sunken ditch or trench, acting as a boundary to keep livestock out of gardens and formal grounds. From a distance, the landscape appears unbroken and open, but the wall cleverly prevents any unwanted roaming animals from entering. The name "Ha-Ha" supposedly comes from the surprised reaction of people who first encountered the hidden drop. As ARC has a repertoire of historic buildings, a ha-ha wall is something we’ve come accustomed to, it's also a clever design technique that you may see in some of our more recent developments. #Architecture #LandscapeDesign #DesignHistory #ArchitecturalTerms

We’re so very proud to add this piece of hardware to the list of growing accolades Alluvial Decoder has received over the past few years.. While certainly “unofficial”, this “award” may honestly be one of the most meaningful to us as this entire instance occurred within the context of a spontaneous conversation among relative strangers (now new friends) on the ever-critical need for accessible, socially impactful design. We truly cannot thank Rob Gregory - Architect, Jonathan Lowy, and the fine folks from VMZINC for their support and for calling attention to our project. We believe it, and others tackling similar major world issues, to be vastly important in today’s rapidly-changing environment (both literally and figuratively) While not taking home any new “official” awards, Alluvial Decoder clearly resonated with numerous delegates/judges and quickly became a major talking point amongst many in attendance as a truly extraordinary achievement. As a result of these discussions we’ve had numerous folks from nearly every corner of the globe expressing interest in using it as a key project precedent for community/social impact, data visualization, wayfinding, climate awareness, and small budget/big impact design. That alone is so very much more than we could have ever hoped for. Thank you to the wonderful folks at World Architecture Festival for giving us such an incredible platform for these conversations to occur. *see some of the jury’s comments here (there are 3 short clips side by side on our feed) https://lnkd.in/eXRkCPKH #agangofthree #worldarchitecturefestival #waf #alluvialdecoder #stormmemorial #climatechange #landscape #impact #socialimpact #dogoodwork #morewithless a gang of three City of Raleigh Municipal Government Lincoln Hancock William Belcher S. An unofficial privilege for me was to present William H. Dodge from a gang of three with a hand made replica World Architecture Festival award… A Gang of Three is a multidisciplinary arts practice that focuses on research-based, community-engaged, site-specific projects at the intersection of public art, planning, and design. Winning many plaudits this year, their City of Raleigh Storm Memorial, entitled Alluvial Decoder, is about shared urban memory, community, climatic and planetary awareness, modesty, and of frank, shared experience. Part public art, part urban realm, part landscape design, Alluvial Decoder comprises a system of rudimentary yet deliberately placed markers that combine to tell a story about both endurance and pliability – in their distinct physical manifestation, and the project’s economic approach to both design and construction. Presented alongside a range of Urban design and landscape projects with multi-million-dollar budgets, Alluvial Decoder covers and reorganizes nearly two acres of landscape, for only $50,000 – inclusive of all design and contractor fees. Emotions ran high in the presentations with panelists and audience members clearly moved by the story, so it seemed a fitting conclusion to the official awards programme for Jonathan Lowy to have donated the unofficial VMZINC prize for maximum impact! good morning Diyar (neighboring residential planning project) I want to share with you the project -Diyar - is a project located in Aswan New City - The aim of the project is to prepare a residential neighborhood that meets the population's needs for basic services and living well-being by providing services minutes away from your home and taking into account the realization of pedestrian trails and the functioning of a central park in the vicinity. This is a picture of environmental preservation and appreciation. - Site analysis of the Earth: The Earth's shape is four ribs in a curved shape and these ribs have been dealt with as they have clearly affected the layout of the neighborhood and the division of areas. Temperatures and rainfall are 50 ° C with scarcity of rain. The terrain is considered a near-level Earth with a simple inclination to neglect. Target Population Studies: Housing levels were divided into 3 levels (low, medium, high) -The proposal for neighborhood residential scheme: It was proposed to 3 schemes for adjacent and trade-offs based on planning considerations consistent with our objective and vision in the project and then work and develop this scheme until the final form, as follows: Population density has been taken into account at each housing level, road levels are correctly graded and resolved, services are distributed at the adjacent level according to the service scale and the population's need for it, attention to green flats and the provision of a green belt surrounding parts of the vicinity, horizontal projectiles are designed for each housing level with space plots and a regulation for their construction. At last, I would like this project to impress you and make the most of anyone and thank my architects: Amr Saleh Aliaa Hussein Radwa Hussein Karim Drawi Yasmin Mohammed Zainab Ramadan - full project on Behance https://lnkd.in/dZvYv6i3 ....................???? #urbanism #architecture #urban #urbanismo #city #design #urbandesign #arquitectura #landscape #art #urbanphotography #urbanplanning #photography #travel #architecturelovers #street #streetphotography #cityscape #citylife #architecturephotography #ig #archilovers #publicspace #building #archdaily #architectureporn #architecturestudent #cities #urbanlife #architettura

Every Heritage project has its own set of journeys. Highclere Castle, built in 1679 is one of the oldest and known heritage in London. Projects like this requires lot of planning in respect of architectural and structural aspects keeping the essence of the space in same format. At BimOffis, by collaborating closely with our client and getting rough details, we renovated the archaeological beauty working closely with Heritage of London Trust and restructured the entire model, providing 2D floor plans and an almost exact 3D model, capturing both the accuracy and historical essence of this space. ? ???????????????????? ??????????: One of the prime challenges was achieving a high level of visual detail without compromising original structure of the castle. This required balancing the already structured textures, accurate lighting, and historical materials that’s the touchpoint. ? ????????????????: We were successful in delivering the detailed floor plans and 3D Models that honoured the castle’s authenticity and met with client expectations. The project’s efficiency was further increased through clear communication and understanding from the heritage from Heritage of London Trust, ensuring a memorable and satisfying outcome. ? Let’s dig in deeper and understand what your project craves for. RAFAEL MANZANO PRIZE 2013 | Fernando Gómez-Stern and Ignacio Medina. Born in Seville, Fernando Gómez Stern and Ignacio Medina received this award for their restoration works in the huge complex of domestic buildings known today as Casas de la Judería, in Seville. Completed in 2012, it was carried out over three decades, from house to house, according to the logic of the neighborhood’s formation, thus maintaining a sense of its own evolution. It is of artisanal work, done without initial planning regarding its extension and use. Future flexibility within the project is helped by discovery during construction that design can be slightly revised to respond to unexpected circumstances by adding to or subdividing spaces and houses as needed. The group of 19 houses in the Jewish quarter of Seville is currently used for hotel and residential use and is therefore the result of an urban revitalization of this historical sector of great artistic value, rooted in the centre of Seville. In the restoration, the architectural language and traditional techniques have been used with modern auxiliary means as well as materials and finishes equal to the originals that remained, using, to this end, transported pieces or materials from nearby demolitions.
