With over 3 million households in Australia facing food insecurity, there’s a critical need to address both food waste and accessibility. Farmers Pick works alongside growers like Catherine Velisha at Velisha Farms to rescue “imperfect” fruits and vegetables that are deemed too small or misshapen for supermarket shelves—yet just as nutritious and delicious. This isn’t just about feeding people; it’s about rethinking the system. As Catherine shared, we, as consumers, play a powerful role in shaping what’s “acceptable.” By embracing produce in all shapes and sizes, we’re challenging a broken system and supporting local farmers. It all started back in 1910 when Sonora Smart Dodd wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children on his own. She championed the idea of a day to celebrate dads, and in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson supported the concept. It wasn't until 1972, though, that President Richard Nixon officially declared Father's Day a national holiday. ???? Now, how does this tie into the produce industry, you ask? Well, just like dads, the produce industry is all about nurturing and growth! ???? From planting seeds to tending crops, farmers pour their hearts and souls into providing us with the freshest fruits and veggies. And just like fathers, they work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure their families—and ours—have the best quality produce on the table. ???? This is such a powerful, succinct article highlighting the staggering amount of surplus healthy food in our province, and the atrocity of the level of #foodinsecurity that exists in the face of it. At the Greater Vancouver Food Bank we are innovating, supporting other #foodbanks and #farmers, and trying to communicate with our provincial government that there are solutions (which don't include growing more food), and that we're here to help.

The Argyll and Bute council worked with new business Wild Jura using venison from local estates. Reducing food miles and improving the dietary protein content. Food for Life Scotland developed burger and meatball recipes that are going down a treat with the island children. One child commented: "Having venison for the first time in school was great..its good for the environment and everyone absolutely loved it."
