?? **A Humbling Memory: Our First “Guiding Your Children’s Education Summit” ??** Yesterday, I took a quick glance at my Facebook page and was reminded of a special moment 9 years ago, in 2015. This memory brought back such emotional and humbling reflections as I remembered starting our very first **Guiding Your Children’s Education Summit** with my husband. For weeks leading up to the event, we pounded the streets, knocked on doors, and handed out leaflets to anyone willing to listen to our mission—to empower parents and transform their children’s lives by understanding the core principles within the education system. In the end, only 4 attendees joined us. But what an impact we made! Their eyes were opened, and we knew our passion had been shared. At the time, we were also running the **Cedar Tree Saturday School**, which was thriving until the pandemic hit. It was during those conversations, particularly with my son and his friend, that I realised many parents were unaware of how the education system could significantly shape their children’s futures, especially if they didn’t pass their GCSEs. The truth is, the education system often fails to provide the support needed when our children struggle. The results can determine their paths, but the system doesn't always help as we expect. That image below symbolises our humble beginnings, and I’m so proud to say that we will be hosting our **3rd annual summit** in just 4 weeks! ?? We can’t wait to see you there! ??? Great to see the Mastery Transcript Consortium? (MTC) highlighted in this thoughtful and thorough piece!
You might think that I’m sharing this December cover story from The Atlantic by David Brooks because he gave such a generous endorsement to Mastery Transcript Consortium? (MTC) towards the end: and you’d be (partially) right! Rather, I hope you can make time to read the full piece, because what Brooks has done here is basically make the same case — albeit more eloquently, and to a national audience—that we’ve been making since 2017. Simply put, the way “elite” highly selective colleges make admissions decisions has enormous cascading effects to all of HE and K-12. It has effectively broken the way we think about school and learning, and by so doing is having outsized negative consequences not just on schooling, but on society at large. We know that there are other skills and abilities that matter—we need to capture those and restore them to equal footing. Also—hat tip to our friends at Big Picture Learning, who also got recognized for their awesome work on the IBPLC! Andrew Frishman Carlos R. Moreno

?? Missed our latest webinar? Now’s your chance to watch Can We Trust the Transcript: Recognizing Student Potential through More Accurate and Fair Grading! During this insightful session, we uncovered three big ideas: ?? Accurate grading is essential for students' futures, yet is often compromised by non-academic factors. ?? Schools across the country are boosting grading accuracy through strategic engagement, teacher training, and system adjustments. ?? Research shows that equitable grading practices improve outcomes for all students, particularly students of color and those from low-income families. A highlight from Nia Rashidchi, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services at Castro Valley USD: "Grades impact the trajectories of our students and their experiences; they drive whether students get opportunities to participate in certain things—whether it’s high school course access, honors, or remedial classes. That’s why we’re working to shift to grading practices that truly reflect what students know and can do. This shift in grading is about equity—ensuring all students have an equal chance to succeed. Our goal is to implement practices district-wide that foster confidence and opportunity, not barriers." ?? Calling all #highered leaders and #grantwriters. Interested in learning how colleges are using federal grants to develop in-house coaching programs? You’ll want to check out this webinar!
At InsideTrack, we are proud to work with institutions to secure federal grant funding and implement sustainable student support initiatives. Dr. Stacey Randall at?Waubonsee Community College, Dr. Kari Schimmel at?Illinois Central College and, Dr. Kelly Wood at?Missouri State University-Springfield will be sharing insights on the grant proposal process, requirement navigation and best practices for tapping into the power of partnerships to take their funding further. This past school year, our school took a bold step by implementing student-led conferences for the first time. In retrospect, it was an ambitious move that, despite its challenges, holds immense potential for enhancing our students’ learning experiences. The concept of student-led conferences empowers students to take ownership of their learning. By preparing and leading discussions about their progress, strengths, and areas for improvement, students develop critical reflection and communication skills. It also fosters a more engaging and personalized dialogue between students, teachers, and parents. However, like any new initiative, our first attempt at student-led conferences had its share of hiccups. The process was not without its challenges, and we quickly realized that proper implementation is key to unlocking its full benefits. From scheduling and preparation to guiding students in self-assessment, there were many lessons learned along the way. Yet, this experience underscored an important lesson: the beauty of not being afraid of failure. Embracing the possibility of failure is an integral part of growth. Each attempt, regardless of the outcome, provides valuable insights and opportunities for improvement. As we reflect on our journey, we recognize that trying something new and innovative in the pursuit of better learning outcomes is always worth it. The willingness to experiment, learn from mistakes, and strive for continuous improvement is what drives us forward. I am optimistic and excited about the future. With the insights gained from our initial implementation, we are better equipped to refine and enhance the process. I look forward to the next round of student-led conferences, confident that we will build on our experiences and move closer to realizing the full potential of this transformative approach. Let’s continue to embrace change, learn from our experiences, and grow beyond grades.
With student-led conferences, families hear how their child is progressing, more than any number or letter could tell them. They become a part of the process, learning about their child’s interests and passions. — Gillian Berard #GBGEdu https://lnkd.in/ec_yGAMM
