Ahead of the King's Speech today, ASH Scotland is urging the new UK Government to commit to reintroducing the Tobacco and Vapes Bill and work to eradicate the damage that profit-centred tobacco corporations are inflicting on people’s lives. We have written to the new Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, to encourage him to urgently reintroduce the UK-wide Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which proposed changing the law to prevent anyone born on or after 1 January 2009 from being sold tobacco. This would mean tobacco being progressively and incrementally cleared from retail space, as well as no longer making it an offence in Scotland for under-age customers to purchase the addictive, health harming substance. The American Lung Association released the 22nd annual “State of Tobacco Control” report earlier this week, which finds that Missouri received four F grades and one C grade for efforts to prevent and reduce tobacco use. This year’s report noted the need for Missouri policymakers to focus on strengthening the state smoke free policy and supporting local tobacco control policies. As you can see, the state of Missouri has a lot of room to improve. New today: Changes to the make-up of the European Parliament may favour a more lenient approach to vaping as a key tool to help smokers quit, an MEP has said. Current Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Radka Maxová says that newly elected MEPs - following the elections in June - may lead to less restrictive positions on how nicotine alternatives such as vapes are regulated.? However, she says the parliament’s current conservative stance is likely to be reflected in its upcoming proposal of a revised EU tobacco policy framework. Maxová, from the Czech Republic, who serves within the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democratic (S&D) group, told ECigIntelligence: “Of course, the composition of the Parliament can shift the balance of opinion, and so I hope that there will be more advocates of the harm-reduction approach when it comes to tobacco products.” Link below...

While US/UK armed Israel risks dragging us into war to keep Jewish apartheid leaders in power, ( Israeli state is clearly not in existential danger), 1 in 4 UK children are undernourished, and private water companies are pumping increased volumes of sewage into our waterways ( with no improvement in sight) the UK government and our political elites/MPs across the parties deem a smoking ban ( for those born after 2009) as an issue to prioritise after a long Easter break. Shouldn’t we expect our “elected” representatives, at national and local level , to do better? Respective media coverage plays along, repeating lines the circus gives them/us , exhibiting little discretion, critical analysis or even questioning claims provided. It is no surprise public is turning elsewhere for information, which is now largely driven by private profit interests promoting polarised society. https://lnkd.in/eJ-tqMr3
