APCL 12 Days of Christmas #10! ?? A&P Falmouth successfully completed a programme of works for Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines' Balmoral. Balmoral entered dry dock at A&P Falmouth on 1st December for a two-week programme of maintenance, including an ultra-high pressure water blast of the underwater hull, application of silicone paint to improve fuel efficiency and installation of new propellers and bow thrusters. A workforce of more than 700 people helped to complete the busy programme, including 350 Fred. Olsen crew, and 30 apprentices at A&P Falmouth. Samantha Stimpson, CEO of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, said: “This has been an incredibly successful dry dock programme, allowing us to not only conduct important maintenance but also make some exciting enhancements for our guests. “The maintenance and improvements we have made, including through the repainting of the hull and the upgrading of our propeller and stabilisers, will allow us to sail more efficiently and sustainably, whilst continuing to offer a comfortable and enjoyable experience on-board. “This is our third schedule of work to be completed by the team at A&P Falmouth, and continues our commitment to using UK shipyards, supporting the local economy and supply chain, and providing valuable experience to the workforce and it’s apprentices.” David McGinley, CEO of APCL Group, said: “APCL was delighted to welcome the Balmoral back to A&P Falmouth for what is her second refit at the facility. “APCL is proud of its ongoing relationship with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. This is the fifth dry docking to take place at APCL’s facilities and the knowledge and vital Learning from Experience we are developing on each vessel is enabling us to help minimise the downtime of the Fred. Olsen Fleet. “Contracts such as these make a significant economic contribution to the prosperity of the UK and helps to support our workforce and apprenticeship programme. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines over the months and years to come and we send our best wishes to Balmoral, her crew and passengers as they set sail on their next adventure.”

Float Your Boat program – Svitzer Newcastle Svitzer recently hosted 40 Year 10 students that have expressed an interest in the ‘Float Your Boat’ program. This is a new initiative partnering with the NSW Department of Education’s Regional Industry Education Program to offer students first-hand experience and skills within the Maritime industry. Svitzer will be taking on board two of the program’s students in 2025 for a school-based apprenticeship and traineeship program (SBAT). The successful candidates will acquire the necessary experience to work in the Deck Rating position on our tugs, with further experience and study then allowing them to transition to Master or Engineer. Being in the Marine Industry has it's perks. Most of the time your office is a Super Yacht (which 99.9% of the population would never get access to), you get to travel to exclusive destinations, you get to rub shoulders with the rich and famous. Plus you can start right out of Highschool without incurring student loans that you'll have to pay off for the rest of your life. If interested, take a second to view this video explaining how to get started and what resources are at your disposal.
A skilled workforce is critical for the sound growth of the marine industry, and our Yacht Service Technician Apprenticeship Program is the first step in training the next generation. MIASF is proud to have teamed up with CareerSource Broward to create a video showcasing the program, which offers high-wage, high-skill, and high-demand career paths that fill a specific need for our industry. Take a look at how the program has been vital to our students, and their success in the industry. If you're interested in being a part of the program, classes begin this January and the deadline to register is December 6th. Spots are filling quickly! Two years ago, when I was serving as Operations Director, I was working in my garage just before Thanksgiving with the door open. I overheard two of my neighbors on the sidewalk outside discussing their holiday plans. One mentioned that his daughter and grandkids live in Poulsbo, but said, “We’re not going over to see them this Thanksgiving because you just can’t trust the ferries.” Hearing that hit me hard. It was a stark reminder of the real impact service disruptions have on the communities we serve. That moment has stayed with me, driving my commitment to restore reliable service and push for service excellence. Today, we’re proud to report a significant milestone: for the first time since late 2021, we’ve gone four consecutive weeks without a single canceled sailing due to crew shortages. This progress is encouraging, especially considering that our previous record was just seven days back in May. But we’re not done yet—four of our routes are not yet restored, and occasional disruptions will still happen. As we head into the holiday season, we remain committed to restoring full service and doing everything we can to minimize disruptions. Our training programs are yielding positive results, with a higher-than-usual number of licensed deck officers ready for orientation this month. A new cohort of MITAGS Apprenticeship Program students starts in January, and we’ll soon announce the 12 individuals selected for the full-ride, two-year apprenticeship program. Additionally, we’re focused on developing initiatives to attract more engine room crews. It's important to recognize our incredible crew dispatch team, who make hundreds of calls daily to ensure smooth operations, and our outstanding customer service team, who work tirelessly fielding customers' calls and partnering with operations to resolve issues. Their hard work has been crucial as we've worked toward this milestone. Our ferry crews, terminal staff, dispatchers, and customer service agents all play a vital role, in keeping the system running, especially during disruptions beyond their control.
