Digital access is a super Social Determinant of Health (SDOH). In our internet-dependent world, it impacts our access to every other SDOH, such as housing, employment, and healthcare. Information and education flows through digital channels. For those of us without access, it is difficult to find the way back across the divide. In my work advancing Age-Friendly design in products, systems, and public spaces, I see firsthand the negative impact for those growing up and growing older on the other side of the digital divide. This conference was full of community leaders who understand how to meet people where they are. And if they attended our panel they came away with a better understanding of how political power shapes our digital accessibility, and even the conference itself. Along with why and how to navigate it. Thank you to The Enterprise Center for making sure community leaders from Chattanooga were represented to tell the story of all the great work we’re doing here. From EdConnect to Tech Goes home, our municipal broadband network allows us to better serve our community. Thank you, EPB. These folks I was privileged to sit alongside are brilliant. Moderator, Christopher Mitchell kept us on track and created space for Dan Ryan and I to celebrate Chattanooga’s successes, but also its opportunities to thwart statewide efforts to further marginalize the queer community through anti trans legislation. Joshua Edmonds is one wise human, who probably should have been a keynote speaker at this conference. Cleveland, Ohio is lucky to have him as they build their own community broadband network. Thanks to Shayna Englin I know more about how a community foundation can support digital equity, or anything it values in a community, with people. She brought a perspective we don’t often have in the South. One of a progressive state but with some of the same opportunities we have. Folks. We are citizens who have power. We can build power by coming together and organizing, and use it to create the communities we wish to see. Whether it’s your neighborhood association or a board you serve on, you can activate your listening, hear other people’s stories and connect to make change. We can also do this on a statewide or national scale, but slightly differently. Yes, we put connection at the forefront of our everyday. We also get better at recognizing bias in how we get our news and when we are being motivated by fear. How is your week shaping up? How can you give away your power? Where do you get your news? And are you living above the line?

This week, we join the National Digital Inclusion Alliance (NDIA) in celebrating Digital Inclusion Week as we recognize the importance of equitable access to technology and the internet for all communities. Digital inclusion is not just about having access to the internet; it’s about ensuring everyone has the skills, resources, and opportunities to fully participate in today’s digital world. This is especially vital as we work toward closing the digital divide in our most underserved areas. Bridging the gap of the digital divide toward a more equitable and inclusive society takes all of us. This can look like supporting your local libraries, community centers, schools, and nonprofits who are taking steps to provide a more digital inclusive facility. It may look like supporting organizations who are committed to distributing devices or hosting digital literacy classes. Bridging the gap also takes policy change and advocacy.
