At age 18, youth with HIV may have a shorter lifespan compared to youth without HIV, suggests a simulation by researchers funded by The National Institutes of Health (NIH). Estimates ranged from roughly 10 to 20 lost years depending on sex assigned at birth, whether HIV was present at birth or acquired later, and whether youth received ideal HIV care. Today, on #NationalHIVTestingDay, we celebrate the power of knowing your HIV status. But the fight against HIV doesn't end there! This year, let's focus on inclusive research to ensure everyone has access to effective treatment. Why is Inclusive Research Critical? Current research doesn't always represent the diverse communities most affected by HIV. This can lead to treatment gaps and unequal health outcomes. Inclusive research ensures new treatments work for all populations. How Can You Make a Difference? Get tested for HIV: Knowing your status empowers you to make informed decisions about your health. Support organizations conducting inclusive HIV research. Demand change: Advocate for policies that prioritize diverse clinical trials. Together, let's build a future with equitable access to testing, treatment, and research for everyone. #NHSTD #EndHIVStigma #minorityhealth #clinicaltrials #clinicalresearch #clinicalresearch #laboratory

Costs should never be a barrier to HIV care and that's the promise of The Ryan White Program. And beyond HIV-related support, many of its other vital services (like dental, mental health, nutrition, etc.) are underutilized even though more people are eligible than they realize. Leading the strategy for the 'I'm+ LA' campaign to raise awareness and connect people with Ryan White was incredibly rewarding. In research we learned that our audience is already open to more support and simply providing information about Ryan White services empowered them to take action—an insight and behavior not always seen in other gov't service promotion work. Working with a talented team, the campaign leveraged testimonial-style creatives with engaging social content to support how our audience gathers and shares information online. The results? Not only did the campaign meet and exceed every KPI, but website traffic continued to climb by nearly 40% above benchmark even after the media campaign ended. Reaching the EHE's goal of a 90% reduction in new HIV transmissions by 2030 is not a just a vision, it's a reality. As we continue to connect people to programs like Ryan White, we must also ensure that elected officials keep the 2030 promise alive by funding and protecting all EHE initiatives. #HIV #RyanWhite #EndTheEpidemic #PublicHealth #HealthEquity
1.2 million people in the U.S. have HIV, and about 13% of them don’t know it and need testing, according to HIV.gov. As health communicators, our messages can help connect populations with crucial HIV care that saves lives. To help promote care, the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health Division of HIV and STD programs worked with the Rescue Agency to help promote the Ryan White Program, a resource that provides free and low-cost HIV care. Scaling HIV Treatment Literacy Beyond ART Clinics During the #CLMRegionalDialogues, a critical issue emerged — the need to expand HIV treatment literacy to all entry points within health facilities, not just ART clinics. Every point of care should be equipped to provide essential information to patients. As Lillian Mworeko highlighted, "People are using self-testing in diverse ways. The challenge is ensuring everyone has the right information. We must bridge the knowledge gap so that self-testers are fully aware of all the necessary details." This is a call to action for healthcare providers and advocates alike. We need to empower every touchpoint in healthcare facilities with the capacity to educate and inform. By doing so, we can ensure no one is left behind in the fight against HIV. #EndAIDS2030

“Before I was so afraid of HIV - now, I am good friends with people in this room and their HIV does not scare me at all." - Progam participant (Tanzania) One of the key factors identified by our Tanzanian partners that mitigates isolation, and facilitates a culture of inclusion and belonging, is education. During weekly training sessions over a 12 month period, caregivers gain knowledge across several key areas. This includes an accurate understanding of HIV, which is so critical in working against oppressive cultural/social stigmas. Improvements over time are measured, as seen via the image below. These gains foster healthier relationships.. with self, peers, and the wider community. Ultimately, caregivers become beacons of wisdom and knowledge for their extended families and wider community! How can the HIV response in Canada better serve Black communities? In 2022, Dr. Winston Husbands, a key HIV researcher in Canada, called together Black activists, researchers and academics, people living with HIV and frontline workers. They formed an ad hoc committee on HIV. Their vision: achieve justice and health equity. Together they drafted, We Can’t Breathe: A Manifesto for Transformative Action to address HIV among Black Canadian Communities. Its 10 demands — for HIV service providers, researchers, funders, policymakers and public health authorities — aim to change the trajectory of #HIV within Black communities across Canada. #BHM2024 #BHM Read the manifesto: https://lnkd.in/eMDCXJBy
