?? Blue carbon ecosystems like seagrasses and mangroves are really effective at capturing carbon (they can sequester more carbon per acre than forests!) and provide storm protection, water quality boosts, and economic benefits to coastal communities. Last night the Mizzou School of Natural Resources was a co-sponsor of Doug Tallamy's presentation on the Homegrown National Park effort, and I had the great privilege to introduce Dr. Tallamy. Biodiversity loss is a looming problem for we humans. For the uninitiated, the easiest entry point to this discussion is the Colony Collapse Disorder scare with honeybees of ~2006. Folks, this is an organization worthy of your time, whether you have hundreds of acres to spare for planting native species, or a single planter on the deck of your apartment. Help the bees, grow beautiful flowers, and mow less lawn. Where's the downside?

??What does the ocean mean to you??? For the last few hours of World Ocean Day 2024, let's take a moment to think about the services our blue planet provides for us. For me, completing university on the Cornish coastline meant having a soothing blue haven on my doorstep, to recover from the challenges of university life, to connect with nature, and spend many happy evenings on the beach with friends listening to the sound of the waves. In fact, the ocean is scientifically proven to improve mental health in humans. Looking further afield, in our troubled climate, the ocean takes most of the impact for us. Heatwaves would hit much harder if the sea didn't store as much thermal energy as it does. Tsunamis would be far more damaging if it weren't for coral reefs and mangroves absorbing wave energy. These impacts might be a little hard to imagine, especially if they're far from home. So take a moment to think, what does the ocean offer to you? How do you feel when you're by the sea? Let's keep forging a strong connection between people and the ocean, to celebrate and safeguard our blue planet. #WorldOceanDay
Cornwall is famous for its incredible coastline, and our surrounding seas are just as magnificent. From the weird and wonderful creatures in our rockpools ?? to megafauna like basking sharks ??, we are doing all we can to protect the wildlife in our waters. Today, on #WorldOceanDay ?? , why not find out more about all we're doing and how you can get involved. From volunteering to making good seafood choices, everyone can help make a difference. Calling all bird nerds, plant nerds, and nature nerds! Homegrown National Park? is a grassroots call-to-action to regenerate biodiversity and ecosystem function by planting native plants and creating new ecological networks. THEIR MISSION To regenerate biodiversity and ecosystem function?because every human being on this planet needs diverse highly productive ecosystems to survive. CALL TO ACTION Catalyzing a collective effort of individual homeowners, property owners, land managers, farmers, and anyone with some soil to plant in…to start a new?HABITAT? by planting native plants and removing most invasive plants.??It is the largest cooperative conservation project ever conceived or attempted. THEIR GOAL Our initial goal is 20 million acres of native plantings in the U.S.?This represents approximately ? of the green lawns of privately-owned properties. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE We are at a critical point of losing so many species from local ecosystems that their ability to produce the oxygen, clean water, flood control, pollination, pest control, carbon storage, etc, that is, the ecosystem services that sustain us, will become seriously compromised.
