Permanent closure of California Shakespeare Theater is “definitely in the realm of possibility, sadly,” Worsley said. He explained that it would be very hard for the company to mount a comeback next summer if it cancels “As You Like It.” Even with the very short time frame to raise the money, Worsley and the rest of the company remain “hopeful” that its fundraising goal will be met. The theme of its campaign is “This Wide and Universal Theatre,” a phrase from a passage in “As You Like It.” Donate today: https://lnkd.in/g9eREyhf

The NEA has published a framework on "trend busters" that are increasing their attendance despite national declines, with Ballet Austin and Detroit Symphony Orchestra as two examples. While times are difficult, arts organizations can increase their participation if they are willing to rethink how they engage their communities. #arts #fundraising #strategy #theatre #museum #nonprofit https://ow.ly/9hPC50UcHYV

I was pleased to read Michael Paulson's piece that the beloved Soho Rep. will share space with Playwrights Horizons for the next few seasons. This follows Second Stage Theater's upcoming residency in my former home, Signature Theatre Company, after Second Stage left their own Off-Broadway home. Other examples abound, and, even if these decisions to share space or produce theatre with different relations to real estate are driven by financial need, kudos to those companies that are adopting new approaches. Seeing shows at Soho Rep's 65 seat space on Walker Street was *always* thrilling but, as Cynthia Flowers, Caleb Hammons, and Eric Ting, point out in an email to their community, "Soho Rep is not a building". In a piece by Brittani Samuel, Playwright's Artistic Director Adam Greenfield stated "Through partnership, through a real genuine collaboration where you’re opening yourself up to other ways of working and perspectives, and in doing so making yourself vulnerable, we are creating more possibilities for ourselves.” Somewhere along the way we have lost these principles. I can recite legitimate reasons why theatre companies choose to have their own space, but these decisions are often driven by equating growth with success, donor enthusiasm for contributing to building campaigns with naming opportunities, and organization ego. I've given these issues a great deal a thought based on my own experience of leading theatres that are real estate heavy, and put forward the following guidelines for theatre companies, and funders, particularly institutional ones, to consider: *Let's move towards newly build theatres housing multiple companies; *Funders--and theatre leadership--require that model as a condition of funding; *Rigorous testing of operating costs that are sustainable is necessary; *Let's build theatres that are welcoming and accessible. Greenfield asks, "How can I continue to produce really risk-taking work and encourage an audience’s generosity of heart towards that work” he chuckles, “in a building made of granite and terrazzo floors and glass?”; *Do we need to hire "starchitects"? How does that serve us? My high school built a new theatre. The students wanted to be involved in the the design, and were dismissed. They went ahead and put forward their rudimentary but thoughtful design. Guess what? The architects implemented their plan. Finally, any building campaign *must* include funding for artistic initiatives and, especially, artist compensation. Again, this component should be a condition of funding. The entire theatre ecosystem *must* lift up this standard. In short, in this moment, our approach to real estate is yet another significant area that requires new thinking and action. https://lnkd.in/ejdr_qEr https://lnkd.in/esQeKfS7

It's quite remarkable how Michael Sheen approaches philanthropy. Whilst many of our valued long-term supporters maintain steady, modest contributions to the culture and the arts, Sheen has rather upended the apple cart by selling his houses to establish a new Welsh National Theatre. Rather refreshing, isn't it? The Welsh have always had a particularly rich theatrical tradition, yet it's fascinating to see someone wade in so completely. Mind you, this isn't Sheen's first foray into substantial giving - he's got rather good form for turning his success into meaningful community projects across Wales. The interesting bit is how this sits alongside our traditional funding models. Most of our cherished supporters contribute what they can, when they can - and that's brilliant. Yet here's Sheen, demonstrating an altogether different approach to cultural philanthropy. What's particularly clever is how he's positioned this as more than just theatre - it's about Welsh storytelling, jobs in the valleys, and giving voice to communities that haven't always had the spotlight. Proper joined-up thinking, that. Watching this unfold has been rather enlightening for those of us in fundraising. Perhaps it's time we all had a fresh look at what's possible in supporting our culture. Let's be more like Michael Sheen! https://lnkd.in/eHT-eVxp

I want to take a moment to highlight an incredible client doing truly meaningful work: Actors PLAYground. Amber Ryan Cepkauskas, the owner and creative director, along with her husband, Matt Cepkauskas, have poured their hearts into creating a space where kids can not only learn the art of theater but also build confidence, find their voices, and develop skills like empathy and teamwork. It’s not just about acting—it’s about helping young people grow into their authentic selves. Amber has deep roots in theater, and Actors PLAYground is her labor of love. This year, they’re going all in: leasing a space, casting shows and seeking grant funding to keep this dream alive. And they’re investing in doing it right—while still respecting the reality of a nonprofit budget. I’ve had the privilege of working with Amber and Matt before, and they are, simply put, amazing humans. And they surround themselves with talented, kind-hearted people who share their passion for helping kids thrive. Getting to collaborate with them on this journey has been a professional high point for me. As many of you know, youth activities are rarely about creating future stars—they’re about teaching life lessons. Theater teaches skills that carry kids forward for life: confidence, collaboration, creativity. Amber and Matt know this, and they’ve built something special that deserves our attention. If you’re looking for a way to support a local nonprofit that’s making a difference in kids’ lives, I highly encourage you to learn more about Actors PLAYground—and if you're so inclined, consider donating to help them continue this important work.
