Last week, the EPA released significant news regarding federal PFAS regulations. Here are the highlights. Historic Regulation - The EPA has released final National Primary Drinking Water Regulation (NPDWR) for six PFAS, aiming to protect 100 million people from these chemicals in drinking water. Impactful Changes -?Organizations with private wells, remediation obligations, or NPDES discharges will face significant, costly impacts. MCLs Established -?Enforceable Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) set for PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, HFPO-DA, and PFHxS, with a mixture approach for managing combined PFAS concentrations. Compliance and Flexibility -?Public water systems have three years for initial monitoring, with a five-year deadline for corrective actions. The rule includes flexibilities for small systems and reduced monitoring based on results. Cyclopure, a materials science and engineering firm, is unveiling the newest products in its line of home filtration solutions: the Purefast Home80 and Purefast Home20. These water-filtration systems utilize high-capacity and point-of-entry techniques with the adsorbent DEXSORB to remove PFAS to nondetectable levels. The Purefast Home20 can provide 20,000 gallons of PFAS-free water before replacement is needed, and the Purefast Home80 is designed to provide 80,000 gallons before replacement. These new filters have also been tested for nondetect removal of PFHpA, PFHxS, PFNA, PFBS, GenX, and PFDA—covering the EPA PFAS 6 and all 7 PFAS covered by NSF ANSI 53. Filter replacements are offered as part of Cyclopure’s exchange program, in which participating customers receive a 25 percent discount on replacement filters when they return used filters to the company. A big thank you to Cox Castle for hosting an extremely informative PFAS seminar with Haley & Aldrich. The presentation focused on the impacts of the U.S. EPA classifying PFAS as hazardous chemicals under CERCLA, better known as Superfund. In addition to the potential impacts for property owners, the session also covered the proposal to include nine different PFAS under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). If included, PFAS would face regulations from creation through disposal. The wide-ranging discussion also touched upon Foam Fractionation as a promising PFAS treatment method.
