The End of Skilled Auto Technicians? Skilled auto technicians are disappearing, and Wisconsin and others are feeling the impact. With declining enrollment in programs like Nicolay Technical College and retiring experts, local repair shops are closing their doors. Businesses like Camper Auto Body struggle to find workers, leaving communities with fewer repair options and higher costs. Nicolay is fighting back with new enrollment opportunities, but is it enough to fix the growing skills gap? Watch now to see how this crisis is reshaping the automotive repair industry—and what it means for your car repairs. ?https://lnkd.in/eQRHAzM2

When I talk to someone about a person they believe to be a really good mechanic, they generally say something like, "He can take a car apart and put it back together from one end to the other." Is that what it takes to be a good mechanic? What is a mechanic anyway? Most of the people reading this don't remember sitting in their cars watching a guy wash their windshields while the gas was pumping - he'd check the oil, too, and he didn't have to ask you to open the hood; the hood latch was outside where anybody could get to it. That might have been the only job this guy did, but he was called a 'mechanic' by just about everybody. Today there are people who do fluid changes at oil change outlets. I say fluid exchanges because they replace engine oil, engine coolant, transmission fluid, and they might even flush a power steering system (even though that operation isn't in any shop manual or owner's manual that I've ever seen). These guys and gals handle wrenches and perform scheduled maintenance operations, and some people might refer to them as 'mechanics.' There are guys at independent shops and dealerships who do everything the oil change express guys do and more. Their jobs require a little more skill. The point is that there are multiple skill levels and everything a 'mechanic' does is vitally important. But the top gun technicians, the real mechanics (at least as far as I've been able to tell in my career) are those guys who can do it all, to include gathering data and figuring out what the problem is so they can fix your car without selling you anything you don't need. A top gun mechanic is a troubleshooter - a diagnostician, if you will. Every mechanic's job is important, and he or she should operate with integrity, honor, and the realization that every vehicle that passes through the service bay is important and that his or her job could mean life or death to the person who drives that car.

#skillsetFriday Years ago when I learned collision repair. One insurance adjuster/ technician skill is: how to recognize indicators of disturbed factory hardware (replaced, scratched, etc.) After changing careers to Industrial Refrigeration (over 10 years ago) , I still use that skill to tell when/ if a package was serviced. Especially factory painted. This was repainted more recently. Just an example of how you can use previous skills in a new career.

#DieselTech #ServiceCall #TruckTroubles #WorkLife So here’s the situation: I’m a diesel technician currently on a service call for 10 trucks that either “won’t start” or “don’t have heat.” ?? But get this—none of the drivers waited for me to arrive, and none of them left their keys for me. Talk about an unofficial strike! ?? Honestly, I'm just sitting here billing them 10 hours for doing very little because I’m magically “working on every truck simultaneously” while waiting for the company to get back to me. ?? If this was a legit issue, I'd probably just charge for the 40 minutes it took to drive here and back. But oh no, this feels like a whole group effort to “stick it to the boss” without actually going on strike. ?? So here’s my plan: I’m waiting as patiently as I can for the company's response on how to handle this situation and billing them accordingly. I’ll keep you all updated with the grand total at the end. Spoiler alert: I already got the total sooner than I anticipated! ??... Are Drivers Secretly Striking by Ignoring Diesel Repairs?
