I love listening to commencement keynote addresses. They provide great general Life inspiration but also great tips on public speaking. I recently stumbled upon this one from Melinda Gates whose Philantropy I have always admired. It was delivered to the Stanford class of 2024. Several parts I could relate to: she described how earlier in her career at Microsoft she did not fit into the brash aggressive culture and did not see other women leaders that had her softer demeanor . I could relate to earlier in my corporate career not identifying with many of the characteristics around competitiveness, directness and even at times over - confidence that I saw in most of the leaders, even women, who successfully climbed the ladder. As a girl I was raised to be humble collaborative, and polite and while I admired these “leadership” characteristics I did not see myself in them. As part of my leadership journey I have had to amp up some of these traits to increase my own effectjveness but I can relate to the feeling of so many women who look to other women leaders around them and say “this is not me”. I so appreciate that the workforce has gradually evolved to be more open to different leadership styles and strengths. I also was inspired by Melinda Gates analogy of the small wave and the big wave: the small wave has the persoective to tell the big wave “you are not just a wave you are water you can take many forms”. It’s natural to feel we are locked into 1 career path because that’s what we have done or what we have experience in. The reality is that most people have at least 3 careers in their lifetimes. Just like a wave is not just a wave it’s water that can take many forms, we as professionals often have a set of skills that can be transferred into so many varied professions and we are rarely locked into just 1 path. Finally I loved her wisdom around approaching life transitions (job loss, divorce, medical diagnosis, loss of a loved one etc…) with radical open-heartedness. Letting go of plans and the way I thought things were going to be, has often been the most difficult for me in transitions. But radical open-heartedness is an important muscle to flex. Thank you for the words of wisdom! https://lnkd.in/gdNmx682

Last week, I had a surreal moment addressing the students of St Joseph's University as the Chief Guest of the National Level Business Competition, Eminence 4.0. Why surreal? 55 years ago, my father graduated from these hallowed halls. When I told him about my speech, his eyes lit up with pride and nostalgia. As he walked me through memory lane, naming faces and sharing stories, his voice softened when he realized many of those cherished individuals were no longer with us. It struck me then – time waits for no one, and the choices we make today will reverberate through the years to come. I shared three universal truths that have shaped my journey in both business and life: ? #Decision Making - You're valued not just for your skills, but for your ability to make decisions with limited information. ? #Drive - The extra mile is never crowded. It's that extra call to a client/ candidate, additional market research, or one more pitch refinement before the big presentation. ?#Example - Every email, meeting/interaction, and deadline you meet—or miss—builds your brand. Your personal brand isn't what you claim; it's what others experience. Let your decisions be thoughtful, your drive relentless, and your example inspiring. Your parent(s) might one day share proud memories of your achievements, just as mine did. #stjosephs #businessfest #speaking #conference #people #students

Came across a powerful video by Melinda French Gates that resonated with me as I work on helping a 6-year-old overcome her fear of water. The "big waves small waves" story shared in the clip emphasizes the importance of courage in facing head-on challenges. The message goes beyond just surviving big waves; it highlights the significance of adapting to changes that follow challenges. As the narrative beautifully puts it, "Once the smaller wave realizes that it is not just a wave, but water, it becomes free to take on new forms." This insightful clip is a reminder for all of us, not just for Stanford grads or a 6-year old. Check this out and I hope you regain your power to conquer the 2nd half of 2024. #pruesnote
