In the VFX industry, companies are allocated a fixed number of credits they can distribute to their team members for their contributions to a project. Often, the bulk of hiring occurs towards the end of a project to accelerate the completion of work, and this usually involves hiring highly experienced professionals. Despite their crucial role, many of these late hires, who are frequently senior artists brought in to ensure timely delivery, do not receive credit for their efforts. This issue is not limited to junior staff; senior artists also face the unfairness of being overlooked in the credits simply because they joined the project later in its timeline.

The graduation season is upon us. It's also the time you get approached by eager graduates for job opportunities. The past 18 months have been challenging enough for the industry and all involved in it. Now let’s take a moment to consider students who have spent years studying, inspired by the work of professionals like you, waiting to enter the field. Let's not forget, taking loans, spending their parents' hard earned money and often, moving far away from loved ones. I started similarly 14 years ago and am so grateful to the person who saw my potential and offered me my first job as an FX TD. We all have busy schedules and couldn't possibly speak to every aspiring VFX artist that approached us or accept every invite on LinkedIn. However, if each of us picked one or two students that show promise and helped mentor them, collectively, we could help so many. I’m in conversation with a few such students. I am advising them to continue working on their reels, upload personal projects on platforms, interact on LinkedIn, and prepare for interviews. I am also encouraging them to apply for runner positions, as it serves as an excellent entry into the studio. If you are looking for junior artists or runners, please reach out to me for a few names. As job seekers know, there's lots of stories about how employers will toss a resume for minor errors or omissions. Well the reverse can be true. I just followed a link from an employer's website to apply for a VFX artist position (let's just say they're a fairly "evolved" shop). There's a big form asking for the usual information. There's a minor error on it - it asks for "desired salary", and then two lines later it asks again for "desired hourly work rate" - and BOTH are required fields. Dumb. But that's nothing compared to the fact that the entire form, at the time of this writing, HAS NO SUBMIT BUTTON! There's literally no way to send the information. "I wonder why we aren't getting any interest in that FX position?" I have to wonder how they run the day to day operation.
