The Department for Transport's latest figures show that road casualties have barely decreased over the past decade, with cyclist and pedestrian fatalities flatlining. In 2023, 87 cyclists lost their lives, and while total cyclist casualties were down 4% from 2022, the overall pace of progress is too slow. We're calling for a joined-up approach on cycling infrastructure to create safer cycle networks that connect villages, towns and cities. In his recent report to the EU leadership, #MarioDraghi said cohesion cash needed to be refocused on “education, transport, housing, digital connectivity and planning” to boost growth. Here's how more and better #cycling can help. 1. Education: teach children to ride bicycles, make school zones safe for cycling kids. 2. Transport: boost cycling through investment in safe cycling infrastructure and introduce legislation to increase road safety. 3. #LCRCA2024 | In September, Mayor Steve Rotheram unveiled a ￡57m investment to take the city region’s walking and cycling routes up a gear. The funding will support a variety of schemes including making active easier and travel safer in Knowsley, Sefton, St Helens and Wirral. The schemes are part of wider plans to deliver a 600km network of walking and cycling routes across the Liverpool City Region - with more than 260km set to be delivered by the end of 2026.
