Proposition 5 addresses the challenges of affordability and homelessness in our region by allowing the passage of infrastructure bonds with a majority vote of 55%, consistent with thresholds for school bonds. This could impact homeless and housing-insecure residents in our area by providing much-needed funding for affordable housing along with the roads, sidewalks, parks, and other infrastructure to support new development. #lifemoves #lifemovesorg #webelieve #changemakers #vote

Important takeaways from this Bloomberg Citylab article on #HomelessnessPrevention in County of Santa Clara ?? ?? ?? 1?? Homelessness is PREVENTABLE: “Researchers at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, who studied [the Homelessness Prevention System] found that 81% of those who enrolled were less likely to experience homelessness within six months.“ 2?? It’s more cost-effective to prevent homelessness BEFORE it happens. "...the highest acuity, or most serious, homeless residents cost the county $85,000 annually. It makes the $6,000 it might take to stabilize a resident’s finances over several months look like a bargain." 3?? Imagine the impact possible if prevention programs were scaled nationwide. “I hope that people will look at what Santa Clara County and Destination: Home are doing and look at it as an example of something that others can emulate,” said Wilson Sheehan Lab for Economic Opportunities at Notre Dame's David Phillips. Together, we could ensure everyone maintains their housing and reduce homelessness. We MUST expand financial assistance programs like our county-wide #HomelessnessPreventionSystem and #GuaranteedIncome programs WHILE building more #AffordableHousing Read more at Bloomberg: https://lnkd.in/gsDnbjkM

This initiative by Governor Gavin Newsom represents a significant step forward in addressing homelessness through innovative housing solutions. As advocates for sustainable living and community building, we are inspired by projects that align with our mission to create spaces where people can live and thrive. The construction of these tiny homes is not just about providing shelter; it's about building a future where everyone has a place to call home. However, having a home is different from merely having a shelter. If we don’t address the root issues—mental health, addiction, and the breakdown of the nuclear family—this project may not make the lasting impact we hope for. We're excited to see which companies will take the lead in this important effort and are hopeful that the focus will remain on quality, sustainability, and the well-being of the residents. It’s not enough to just build shelters; we must build communities. It's exciting to work together on building a better California.
More than 300 tiny homes are set to be constructed in Sacramento as the starting point of Governor Gavin Newsom's initiative to relocate unhoused individuals from encampments throughout California. This ambitious plan raises a crucial question: which companies will secure the most significant contracts in this statewide effort to address homelessness? #construction #tinyhouse #homelessness Elizabeth Singleton Alex Savva Malia Murray Elvis Summers Annie Hobson Roger Brul Rory Rubin, Modular BUILDING Solutions Daniel R. Two years ago, I met Ludia, who had been living in and out of shelters with her grandsons for months, unable to find an apartment where her housing voucher could be accepted. Recent research shows that nearly half of California’s homeless population is over 50 years old, and metro-specific homelessness rates are driven overwhelmingly by the scarcity of affordable housing supply. As I've urged in my online book, Congress must streamline tax credit financing of housing, and eliminate current statutory barriers to using federal vouchers in more innovative, less costly housing projects, such as the prefabricated, quick-build projects we see in Mountain View, Redwood City, and San Jose. Local communities need a more nimble federal partner to help older Americans, like Ludia, age in dignity. samliccardo.com/plan/
