People arnt the only ones to immigrate from one country to another. These garden slugs originated in Europe and have done quite well in America devouring lots of tender young vegetable starts as well as native plants that are beyond their seasonal benefits and beginning to rot. Slugs and snails alike are important creatures in our environment decomposing rotting plants as well as fallen leaves, dead insects and dead worms. They just so happen to like fresh veggies too. Just think of all the dead stuff laying around if it weren’t for decomposers to close the loop and help to regenerate soil. The large Banana slug is the only slug native to the US and is the second largest in the world. It has become iconic in the mild climate of the Pacific Northwest and the mascot of UC Santa Cruz. Whatever the slug stop and say thanks for the dirt. Love a slug. The image below shows a European slug feasting on a depleted dandelion turning it back into the soil where next seasons plants will grow.
