Publishing in reputable journals often involves one or more rounds of revisions, which enhance a manuscript's scientific quality and clarity of communication. The iteration process happens between the editor, author, and reviewers. When the same reviewer(s) are engaged throughout the process, each additional round of revision focuses on different issues, contributing to the overall improvement of the manuscript. However, editors sometimes must seek new reviewers after the first round of revision, and this can occur for several reasons: ??Unavailability of Original Reviewers: Original reviewers may become unavailable due to increased workload (e.g., field or lab work), other commitments, or a lack of interest in continuing the review process. Additionally, a long duration between the initial decision and the manuscript resubmission may contribute to the inability to engage previous reviewers. ??Conflict of Interest or Bias: New concerns about potential conflicts of interest or bias may arise, necessitating a fresh perspective to ensure an unbiased evaluation. ??Divergent Reviewer Opinions: Sometimes, the initial reviewers provide highly divergent opinions, prompting editors to seek a new reviewer to provide an additional appraisal and perspective to help decide whether the article is suitable for publication. ??Expertise Gaps: The need for additional analyses or revisions may require expertise lacking in the original reviewers, necessitating the engagement of new reviewers with specific knowledge or skills. From my experience, dealing with different reviewers during the peer review process can be challenging, but it also provides a more comprehensive evaluation of the manuscript. While consistent reviewers offer continuity and a coherent line of critique, new reviewers can identify overlooked issues and ensure the manuscript meets broader academic standards. Besides the instances above, what other situation compels editors to invite a new reviewer after the first round of revision? Please share your experience dealing with the same or different reviewers during the peer review process. #academia #peerreview #science #scientificpublication Oluwaseun Iyasere PhD SAMUEL DUROSARO, PhD Samaila Usman Victoria Anthony Uyanga Taofeek O. Struggle with writing a particular type of scientific document ?? This is a simple comparative guide to help you understand the basics, their purpose, length, intended audience and structure. I have also simplified them here further below: Research Articles: These are detailed reports of original research. Think of them as the complete story of a study, from the idea and methods to the results and what they mean. Review Articles: These summarize and analyze existing research on a particular topic. They don't present new experiments but give you a big-picture view of what’s already known. Case Reports and Case Series: Got an interesting or unusual clinical case? Case reports and series describe these unique medical situations, sharing insights that might not come up in larger studies. Letters to the Editor: Short and sweet, these letters address specific issues about a published article or share new thoughts. It’s a quick way to engage with the scientific community. Conference Papers and Proceedings: These are papers presented at conferences. They can range from full reports of completed research to brief summaries of ongoing work. Great for staying current with the latest developments. Theses and Dissertations: For those pursuing advanced degrees, theses (Master’s) and dissertations (Ph.D.) are comprehensive research projects. They’re detailed, thorough, and a major academic milestone. Grant Proposals: These documents request funding for research projects. They outline what you plan to study, why it’s important, and how you’ll do it. Convincing the funding body is key here. Understanding these types can help you navigate the scientific world, whether you’re reading, writing, or just curious. PS: What strategies do you use to make your research articles more engaging and accessible to a broader audience? #ScientificWriting #Research #AcademicWriting #ScienceCommunication #LinkedInLearning

ACADEMIC PEER REVIEW Who and how do scientific articles get reviewed? You have submitted your article to a scientific journal for consideration. What happens next? In addition to the preliminary evaluation of the manuscript by the journal editors, independent reviewers review the article. ?? Who are reviewers? They are experts in a particular field of knowledge who evaluate the quality of scientific articles. They are usually professors, researchers, or specialist with a lot of experience. They check the article for: Novelty — does the article add something new to science and directly to the investigated field? Accuracy — how correct are the methods, data, and conclusions? Clarity — is the material clear and the arguments logical? ?? How does the review process happen? After submitting an article, the journal editor selects several reviewers based on the topic of the research. Next, the reviewers analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the research and prepare a report with comments and recommendations: to accept, revise or reject the article. All responses are sent to the author so that he/she can revise the comments or explain the controversial points. ?? Why do reviewers do it? Interestingly, reviewers work voluntarily and most often for free! Why? — It's part of scientific culture: you help your colleagues, and they help you. — Reviewing raises your professional status and widens your outlook. — Sometimes journals offer small benefits, such as free access to closed articles or a discount on publication. ?? Do you think the peer review process could be made even more efficient and fair? Share your opinion in the comments ???? #publadvance #Scopus #scopuspublication #scopusindexedjournal #science #publishing #wos #impactfactor #PhD #researcher

Some thoughts on how to structure peer review so that it is more robust and leads to the publication of better science. ? Peer review needs to be more structured - journals should provide reviewers with a transparent set of questions to answer that focus on methodological, analytical and interpretative aspects of a paper. ? Other aspects of a study, such as novelty, potential impact, language and formatting, should be handled by editors, journal staff or even machines, reducing the workload for reviewers. https://lnkd.in/gc9cffD6
