This lawsuit is specifically addressing the growing concern around how social media platforms, with their incredibly engaging and intelligent algorithms, can negatively impact the mental health of young users'. ? I recently wrote about whether it makes sense to set a social media age limit of 16 to safeguard children. So this new legal action coming from the U.S. is a really interesting development. Hopefully this is the start of a global push for more stringent regulations to place age limits for younger users ? ?????? ?????? ???????????????? ?????? ????: ???????? ???????? ?????????????? ???????? ?????? ???????? ?????? ?????????? ?????????????????? ???? ???????????? ????????, ???????????? ?????????????? ???????????? ?????????????? ???????????? ???? ?????????? ?????????????????? ???????? ????????????????? And should tech companies face responsibility for their role in worsening addiction and mental health issues? Or is it the job of parents and schools to manage screen time and limit access to these apps to safeguard the emotional health of children? ? I personally think this should be actioned at government level as we know these apps are addictive, and the government pockets HUGE amounts of money from these companies so I think they have a moral obligation to step in. ???????? ???? ?????? ??????????? ???♂?

The Big Issue is the only paper I buy (thank you vendor Kevin) and reading the beautiful coverage of Amy Winehouse's legacy in providing supported housing https://lnkd.in/e5phA8Qb vindicated this choice - in briefly mentioning the film "Back to Black" they note that addiction is portrayed as the villain rather than any individual. Compare this to the The Guardian coverage of "Back to Black" in which Wendy Ide (14 April 2024) saw fit to use the term "smack weasel" to describe Amy's husband Blake Fielder-Civil. The Editorial Code of Practice of The Guardian does not mention stigma and avoiding non-stigmatising language around addiction but it does state: "Journalists should take particular care with stories about mental health". There is strong evidence that stigma can inhibit help seeking so I urge The Guardian to support recovery potential, be optimistic about recovery, ask staff to observe the code of practice, and avoid using stigmatising language around addiction.

The Center for Countering Digital Hate wants to ensure these platforms are safe and healthy for kids.?However, these "digital babysitters" expose our kids to hate, extremism, drugs, or predators each day while our kids sit at home with us. Gone are the days when "screen time" was just a concern for kids. Adults are starring in their own screen time saga. It's our lifeline to memes, meetings, and maybe a little too much Netflix. I miss the days when the phone was just a phone and there was a whole universe waiting beyond the pixels and the marathon of notifications. An interesting read about Phone addiction which consumes all of us. We use it to manage our professional and personal connections, chats, interactions and in the end having a feeling of missing out on things. Picking the phone ? and starting the ritual all over again. You are not alone. Lately, I have consciously been dumping my phone when I don't need it. Trying not to use it on Saturday or Sunday and then looking at my weekly phone usage report ?? on Monday to see if it has as weekly downward trend. It is liberating and gives me a sense of calmness. These corrective steps can help you reduce your dependence. 1. Self Awareness. Understand how not using the phone makes you feel. 2. Self Regulation. Works for me ??♂? 3. For the last 5 months I'm working on getting off two addictions. By addiction I mean compulsive repetitive behaviour which is not needed and does more harm than good. The top 2 for me: - Eating (more than what's needed) - Mobile/social media (accessing more than what's needed) I consider these addictions more dangerous and deceptive than other ones because they are for something: - very easily accessible. For ex. buffet spreads in cafeteria are designed for over indulgence. Mobile is something we carry with us every minute. - very easy to rationalize. For ex. we need to eat to get energy, stay alive etc. We need mobile/app for staying socially connected and informed etc. It has been a cat and mouse game for me and I'm committed to win. The good news is that I'm learning a lot about how my mind works to trick me.....and how to trick it back. ~S~

75% of babies are exceeding screen use guidelines - and it's detrimental to their health. Take a moment to let that fact sink in. Current recommendations state that kids shouldn’t be on screens at all until age 2. After that, they should only have up to 1 hour of screen time a day. With so many young children exceeding these guidelines, as parents, we have to confront this reality. If we start our kids on screens at such a young age, we risk losing them to screen addiction long before they hit their teenage years. This condition can impair language development, executive functions, attention capacities, and more. I see it every time I visit the park: Kids are glued to their devices, missing out on the world around them. We know the issue exists, we see the numbers, and it’s clear we’re not doing enough to address it. To close this gap and protect the next generation, we need to intervene, and we need to do it now. Together, we can change the narrative around screen time…for the sake of our kids.

Toxic shame is the root cause behind most addictions. People who are addicted are most likely running away from the pain coming from shame. Other addictions are due to people feeling like they're worthless and not good enough when compared with what society says to be "normal". A lot of parents in the 70s, 80s and 90s used to bully, mock, hit and humiliate children in front of everyone. Constantly comparing them to others and making them feel like they're never good enough. This destroys a person's internal world. This is why I constantly speak about the importance of healing our inner child. Couples need to do their own inner work and heal their inner children before thinking about having kids. The future generations depend on us and our wise decisions. The more we neglect doing the inner work now, the more the future generations will suffer. ??
