Just sounds like a defacto union. Although without the threat of a union what would occur. What role has government played in replacing union duties? Been in both corners neither is Holy. The debate must continue. I find many industries run a defacto union, what happens when the threat is gone? Japan France Germany have national unions. Are they the answer, think not they come here to escape. Just starting a conversation no side. Who is not afraid to join in. Fear plays a big role!

It is sad that another principle that made America the leader in innovation is being destroyed so that those in power can live their illusion that they are in control.

It's great to help out. The risk is doing other work three or four times and you run the risk of permanent increase in workload without increase in pay or title.

Great read. It hit home for sure. I’m like the guy in the photo (not as good looking however); but I have a tendency to be tenacious in getting tasks done. Ugh ?? Thx for sharing.

Good advice. I thought there was only one way to be proactive, and that is to get the task or job done! Upon reflection of some very recent experiences of this occurring for me, I probably understand that maybe I need to slow down my enthusiasm to get others on board.

It's ok to be a star player on a team but remember, it's a TEAM! Very important to make your team feel included and inspired by your initiatives. After all, not all "players" are the ones that score goals, the assists are just as important.?

The truth of the matter is that it's not really about when or how to take initiative. It's just mainly about WHO can take initiative. Sadly, American labor force is deeply politicized. Many companies have their chosen people. These are the only people who are allowed to shine brighter than the sun if they so wish, but if as a regular employee you even try to light a tiny candle, you will be treated like you are committing a crime.? So here I am desperately trying to see if I can find a company where I can be allowed to have my own footing and just basically breathe in peace.

Reminds me of the Dilbert cartoon about the employee of whom it is said: "the more productive he gets, the less productive he makes everybody around him". Proactivity needs to be harnessed for good and not evil - and either through lack of context or through a "look at me" motivation -- proactivity can have a downside. The team and the individual should be in sync if the ultimate mission is understood.
