The U.S. Treasury Department's proposed guidance on clean electricity tax credits has underwhelmed biogas and RNG stakeholders due to insufficient provisions. The guidance cites inadequate tracking and verification mechanisms for biogas, RNG, and fugitive methane. The American Biogas Council (ABC) refutes this, asserting that robust tracking and lifecycle carbon accounting systems are in place, recognized by IRS Section 48 since 2004. This uncertainty risks delaying investments and undermines Congressional intent to support all clean energy pathways. From Kansas Public Radio: Kansas and Missouri Becoming Home to Multiple Biogas Facilities TOPEKA, Kan. (KNS) The #renewablenaturalgas industry has surpassed 400 facilities nationwide, with more than two dozen now in #Kansas and #Missouri. Renewable natural gas repurposes methane from #sewage, #hogfarms and other sources to make fuel. Kansas and Missouri now have 25 facilities and more are planned. Shell USA plans to capture #methane from a southwest Kansas #dairy. #Springfield and #KansasCity, Missouri, want to produce renewable natural gas from #wastewater or #landfills. Proponents say this #biofuel helps the climate. Some environmental groups are skeptical. This week, staff from NSW Government’s Hydrogen and Clean Energy team and the National GreenPower Accreditation Program team visited Jemena's Malabar Biomethane Injection Plant. The plant is taking biogas from Sydney Water’s Malabar Wastewater Treatment Plant and upgrading it to biomethane for injection into the gas network to decarbonise fossil gas use. Since commissioning in 2023, over 80 terajoules of accredited GreenPower renewable biomethane has been injected, abating over 5,000 tCO2-e. This biomethane is proving how renewable gas will play a vital role in reducing emissions and promoting a sustainable clean energy future, particularly for NSW’s hard-to-abate industrial and commercial sectors.
