??Watersheds are areas of land where all the water that falls onto it or drains from it flows into the same larger body of water, such as a river, lake, or ocean. They are natural boundaries that separate one drainage basin from another. Essentially, they define the landscape's drainage patterns. ??Watersheds are crucial for several reasons: ??Water Supply: Watersheds supply water for drinking, irrigation, and industrial purposes. ?? Flood Control: Watersheds play a critical role in managing water flow. Vegetation and soil within watersheds absorb and slow down the movement of water, reducing the risk of floods downstream. ?? Water Quality: They help maintain water quality by filtering out pollutants and sediments before water reaches larger bodies of water. ?? Recreation and Tourism: Many recreational activities such as fishing, boating, hiking, and camping depend on healthy watersheds. They attract tourists and provide economic opportunities for communities living within and around them. #watersheds #land #soil #civil #geotechnical #knoledge #education #linkedin #engineering #science

Drrainage density is a crucial tool in hydrology and environmental management, representing the total length of streams and rivers per unit area. It provides insights into several key aspects: - Hydrological Analysis: Helps in understanding the drainage efficiency of a region, which is vital for flood prediction and water resource management. - Erosion Potential: Higher drainage densities often indicate regions with higher erosion rates due to the increased runoff, helping in soil conservation planning. - Land Use Planning: Informs urban planners and engineers about suitable locations for development, ensuring that infrastructure is built in areas with manageable drainage characteristics. REAL-WORLD APPLICATIONS - Flood Risk Management: Drainage density maps help predict flood-prone areas by identifying regions with high runoff potential, aiding in the design of effective flood control measures. - Agricultural Planning: Used to optimize irrigation systems by understanding the natural water drainage patterns, ensuring efficient water use and soil conservation. - Urban Planning and Infrastructure Development: Assists in designing drainage systems, road networks, and residential areas to minimize waterlogging and erosion issues. #ArcGisPro #GIS #Modelling #Surveying #Gis_analyst

"Preparing Green-Blue Infrastructure for #Climate_Change: Part Three" Short-term rehabilitation measures for green-blue infrastructure in the face of climate change In the event of climate change, the following short-term rehabilitation measures can be taken for green-blue infrastructure: 1) Immediate repair of damage to canals, water supply systems, dams, and other water facilities. 2) Dredging and cleaning of waterways and canals to remove silt and sediment buildup. 3) Restoration and rehabilitation of damaged green spaces such as parks, gardens, and trees through replanting, irrigation, and special care. 4) Establishment of temporary and emergency irrigation systems to maintain valuable plants and trees. 5) Temporary repair and restoration of forests and wetlands that have been affected by fire or drought. 6) Short-term rehabilitation measures for green-blue infrastructure in the face of climate change 7) Relocating plants and animals to safer areas if necessary. 8) Utilizing local indigenous and traditional knowledge for rapid infrastructure rehabilitation. These short-term measures can prevent further damage from spreading and lay the groundwork for long-term rehabilitation. However, they require prior planning, adequate financial resources, and sufficient manpower. #ClimateChangeAdaptation #GreenBlueInfrastructure #EcosystemRestoration #DisasterResilience #CommunityEngagement #IndigenousKnowledge #Regional_Planning #Urban_Panning #Urban_Design

#ICYMI we held a briefing with American Rivers on the challenges, opportunities, and future of dam infrastructure in the United States. Detailed summary notes are now available on our website, and you can save our graphic for some key takeaways: ?? Through a process called the Uncommon Dialogue, the hydropower industry, conservation groups, tribes, and government agencies identified common ground on how to manage dam infrastructure. The dialogue identified three Rs: removal, rehabilitation, and retrofit. ?? There are over 500,000 dams in the United States. Only 20-30% of these dams currently serve a purpose like flood control, irrigation, or hydropower. Many dams are abandoned or outdated. ?? The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act allocated over $2.4 billion to support dam removal efforts. ?? The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) both coordinate interagency efforts to address dam safety and dam removal for public safety and habitat connectivity. Tap the link to view the full notes or to watch the briefing again (and see if you can count how many dam puns were made): https://lnkd.in/eHwFMsE2 #Dams #RenewableEnergy #Infrastructure #Rivers #RiverRestoration

Hope you can join me for this special course. The purpose of this course is to teach engineers how to make Low Impact Development projects true to the name suggests.
In the northern climates, wintry weathers are the headaches of #civilengineers at least on two aspects: snow removal and?the adverse?impacts of #roadsalts on?low impact development (LID) projects. It is all too common to observe the damages and casualties in LIDs after salt application. Frequently replacing dead plants–standard operation–poses a high impact to the #environment. Some LID projects were killed because of these unexpected high maintenance costs. Is there a cure??Educating the snow industry to reduce the use of salt is still the best solution. This webinar is about how to catch and store #stormwater and release it when salt is present to?mitigate the damages of LIDs by deicing salt. Join us live on May 9th at 2:00pm EST to learn more!?https://lnkd.in/eqk8TV87

I have heard from so many people saying they have tried and it doesn't work. Salt is one of the major issues for northern climates. The problem can be solved by using stormwater (in wintry weather, melting snow/ice water). The solution is applicable to other soil salinity issues that may be caused by irrigation with reclaimed waste water or other water sources with high TDS. #greenstormwaterinfrastructure #roadsalt #deicing #deicingsalt #soilsalinity #civilengineers #asce #ewri #Raingarden #lowimpact #lowimpactdevelopment #bioswale #wsud #greeninfrastructure #sustainability #landscapearchitecture #civilengineering #greenthegray #stormwatermanagement #architecture #infrastructure #climatechange #watermanagement #stormwater #urbangreening #streetscape #cityplanning #irrigation #irrigationsalinity #reclaimedwastewater #recyledwater

Flood protection system create overflow section The Gailtal valley is a region in Austria that has been affected by flooding several times in recent years - most recently in October 2018 with massive damage and devastation. The flooding was caused by a combination of heavy rainfall and dam failures. In order to prevent future flood damage, the existing dyke and the banks of the river were reinforced and secured by raising the dams. In order to control the overflowing of the Gail in the event of flooding, an overflow section was planned and constructed near Rattendorf. To prevent damage that could jeopardise the stability of the dyke, it was necessary to protect the overflow channel with an erosion-resistant surface layer. The product solution consists of two layers of woven geotextiles (PA/PE) that are connected in a grid pattern. The mats were then filled with high flow concrete. This geotextile formwork reduces the need for additional formwork, saving time and money. The entire length of the dyke with an area of 3,600 m2 (4,300 m2 concrete mats). The highly permeable filter points allow soil moisture to penetrate into the surface layer allowing vegetation to grow. After filling the mats with concrete, they were covered with ≥ 60cm of soil and planted with vegetation to blend in with the surroundings. The natural look was requested by the client and blends aesthetically into the landscape.
